Genital warts
are small reddish-pink bumps caused by a virus (also called HPV, after the
virus that causes them). HPV does not always have visible symptoms. Symptoms
take the form of warts - in women, they can develop on the outside and inside
of the vagina, on the cervix (the opening to the uterus), or around the anus.
Genital warts are less common in men, but when they can appear on the tip of
the penis, the shaft of the penis, on the scrotum, or around the anus. Genital
warts also can develop in the mouth or throat of a person who has had oral sex
with an infected person. Because warts are caused by a virus, there is no
ultimate cure. However, doctors can remove the warts by freezing them,
lasering them, or by a variety of other measures. Recurrence is still a
problem and follow up visits may be necessary to remove more warts.
