Questions

Bacterial Vaginosis is caused by an imbalance in the different types of bacteria in the vagina and can lead to Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (scarring of the uterus and fallopian tubes that can lead to infertility), cause low birth rate, and premature delivery.  BV is spread through vaginal intercourse, but can also be acquired when another external factor disrupts the balance of bacteria in the vagina.  Symptoms of BV include a strong, unpleasant vaginal odor and abnormal discharge.  BV can be prevented by using a latex condom and, if acquired, can be treated using antimicrobial creams.
