Welcome

Welcome to the website for the Rice Community Garden .

The Rice Community Garden is a volunteering and learning space for all members of the Rice community. It was created by students in 1999 with the help of the Rice community and Houston gardeners. It is sponsored by the Rice Student Volunteer Program (RSVP) and the Center for the Study of Environment and Society (CSES), with additional support from Facilities Engineering & Planning. The garden is maintained using an organic approach by a group of volunteers from the Rice community. Food produced in the garden will be donated to Rice serveries and wind up on the plates of students.

Formerly located on the Rice campus between Mudd Lab and Hick's Kitchen, the Community Garden has now been moved to the southwest corner of Wiess College. In the Fall of 2008, Dr. Jennifer Rudgers and Ann Swain are co-teaching BIOS 204 ("The design and practice of community agriculture"), a course that engages students in designing, planting, harvesting, maintaining, and planning for the Community Garden.

This website not only contains information about the garden, but also general links to information for people interested in gardening. Finally, you can also find out how you can help out the garden and keep it alive for years to come. If you have any questions, comments or other feedback, please contact us so that the website can be up-to-date and relevant. We hope you enjoy the website!
