BIOE442 - Tissue Engineering Laboratory

INSTRUCTOR

Dr. Ann Saterbak office: Keck Hall 109 lab: Keck Bld 108 / 113
phone: 713-348-6243 email: saterbak@rice.edu office hours: by appointment

COURSE TIMES

Students are expected to be PROMPT (if not a few minutes early) to lab. Students are also expected to stay until their experiments are complete - even if this is past 6:00 p.m. Students are expected to have READ the appropriate material and/or protocols for that day and PLANNED THEIR ACTIVITIES AND EXPERIMENTS.

Laboratory Sessions

Section 001 meets on Monday and Wednesday 1:00 - 6:00 p.m.
Students will need to attend lab on a few Fridays (lab open 12:30 - 2:30 p.m. ).

Section 002 meets Tuesday and Thursday 1:00 - 6:00 p.m.
Students will need to attend lab on a few Saturdays (lab open 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. ).

COURSE CONTENT

You will conduct a series of tests to synthesize PLLA, characterize PLLA and PLGA, monitor PLLA and PLGA degradation, and assess the viability, attachment and proliferation of HDF cells on PLLA films. You will conduct FTIR and DSC experiments in Dr. Mikos' lab; you must observe the safety standards of his laboratory. You will apply the skills and knowledge you learned in BIOE 342 to develop protocols for manipulating HDF cells on PLLA films. The experiments in the Tissue Engineering Module comprise many of the basic types of experiments that would be required to do a preliminary investigation of a tissue-engineered product. The Module will last 12 sessions. You will write a research paper summarizing the developed methods and results of the Tissue Engineering Module. You will be graded on a draft and final research paper. See the "BIOE 441, Tissue Engineering Module - Research Paper Assignment" handout for details on the assignment and due dates.

Lab Notebook Maintenance

Students are expected to keep a lab notebook to record the pertinent information from the laboratory work. Use the handouts presented in BIOE 342 to guide the preparation of your lab notebook. Lab notebooks will be checked once or twice during the semester. If your notebook is in poor condition, 1-2 points will be deducted from your final course grade.
