COURSE ADMINISTRATION

Late Policy

If an assignment is turned in late, the grade will be reduced 10 points (assuming 100 points total) per day. If your report is late, you must write the number of days it is late on the first page (Honor Code). If you turn in a report late, but do not indicate the number of days it is late and Dr. Saterbak discovers that it is late, you will receive a 0 for that Module.

Safety

All students are expected to work safely in the lab. Safety glasses must be worn at all times. Contacts may not be worn. Students must wear long pants, shirts with shoulders (or a lab coat, buttoned up), and close-toed shoes. Students not adhering to these policies will be sent home to change. Absolutely no eating, drinking or gum chewing will be allowed at any place or time in the lab. The instructor retains the right to penalize a student's final grade if safety violations are noted.

Biohazardous material, glass material, solvents, raw chicken, etc. must be disposed of properly. Details for proper disposal will be discussed in lecture.

When working in Dr. Anvari's lab using the Laser Tweezers, you must wear the yellow wrap-around safety glasses or the brown safety goggles when in the curtained area containing the laser.

Course Materials

One course pack is available at the Rice Campus Bookstore. Additional information will be available in the lab. Background reading is on reserve in the library. When you find typos, mistakes, or sections that are unclear, please let Dr. Saterbak know so that corrections can be made.

Honor Code Policy

Much of the learning in this lab will be from coaching and interaction with other students, the instructor, and the T.A.'s. It is important that a collegial environment is present. For most experiments, you and your partner will collect only one set of data. You may discuss strategies for data preparation and interpretation with your partner and other students, but you must do ALL data calculations, graphing, tabulating, etc. yourself. Also, you must do ALL the writing and poster design work yourself. (An exception to this is the in-class worksheets for the Biopac Module.) You may consult the Lab Protocols, Course Notes, other textbooks, review articles, and published research papers. Obviously, information taken from journals, books and websites must be adequately referenced. You many NOT consult lab notebooks, written reports, posters, data calculations, graphs, or any other material from previous BIOE 441 laboratory classes.

Attendance Policy

Students are required to attend ALL sessions of the laboratory. Job interviews, medical school interviews, other classes, or extracurricular activities are not valid excuses. A student choosing to miss a lab session to attend another commitment must make up the session at a time convenient to Dr. Saterbak (MWF 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. ; Tu/Th 12 noon - 6 p.m.) and possibly her/his lab partner and when the necessary equipment is available. If a convenient time cannot be established or the student chooses not to make up the session, 3 points (assuming 100 points total) per missed day will be deducted from the final grade. If you choose to miss a day, planning ahead will help. You are STRONGLY DISCOURAGED from missing any sessions. Illness and family emergencies will be dealt with on an individual basis. Contact Dr. Saterbak immediately as soon as an emergency arises.

Students in Section 001 will need to come to lab on a few (maximum of 4) Fridays (lab open 12:30 - 2:30 p.m. ). Students in Section 002 will need to come to lab on a few (maximum of 4) Saturdays ( 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. ).

Any student with a documented disability needing academic adjustments or accommodations is requested to speak with me during the first two weeks of class. All discussions will remain confidential. Students with disabilities should also contact Disability Support Services in the Ley Student Center .
