Title: Cow Kissing on the Isle of Skye
Location: Isle of Skye, Scotland
Program: Sweet Briar College Junior Year in France, Paris, France (Mariel)
University of Edinburgh, Scotland (Elizabeth), Spring 2003
Description: While studying in Paris, I took advantage of being within easy reach of so many countries, and after a string of travels in France and elsewhere, I traveled to Edinburgh, Scotland, in May. I met up with my twin sister Liz, who was studying abroad there, and we embarked on a three-day tour of the Scottish Highlands. Crammed into a bus with fellow international travelers, our fun-loving Scottish driver kept us entertained the whole weekend. Not like we needed entertainment - the breath-taking landscapes we explored were a show in themselves. Green hills, misty lakes, and rugged mountains created an environment of mystic beauty; ruined castles, wandering sheep, and lochs rich in folklore completed the picture. From watching a lunar eclipse before dawn to taking a cold dip in the famed Loch Ness, our three days there were full of memorable experiences.
One such experience happened when we had pulled over on the side of a winding highway on the Isle of Skye. A small herd of a type of cow native to the Scottish Highlands affectionately called the 'Highland (hee-land) Coo' - was grazing nearby, and we were all enthralled by their shaggy looks. While the rest of us tentatively fed them pieces of bread, Liz loved them so much she was compelled to offer one of them a kiss. Just when she did, he turned his face up to hers to kiss her back. Against the enchanting backdrop of the fog-covered highland lakes and hills, it was an unforgettable moment that I was fortunate to catch on film.

Title: Petals
Location: Singapore
Program: The University of Tasmania, Australia, Fall 2003
Description: In Singapore I spent a great deal of time in the Indian part of town enjoying the spicy food and colorful shops. This woman wove beautiful flower necklaces by hand, worn by Singaporeans and their visitors too. Most places didn't open until 10:00 or 11:00am, but stayed open until at least midnight, bringing people into the city to talk, eat, and shop in the fair evenings near the equator.

Description:
Verona was one of the most gorgeous cities in Italy. Seeing this painter capture the charm of Verona reminded me of my painting class that I just took where we learned the necessity of capturing the spirit of a subject.
