Civic Scientist

A current climate exists where there is a general misunderstanding, in the public, of the scientific method as well as the role of uncertainty in science. Without a vocal and active scientific community, valid research that may be complicated or unusual may be held back. In order to have well-informed policies, scientists should invest the time to educate the general public in scientific research needs and goals. Scientific research does not exist in a vacuum and requires funding from either the federal government or private industry. Therefore, responding to concerns from the public by explaining the background and future benefits of projects can only promote healthy understanding of scientific research, and thus, advance informed decision-making.
