Kabula Clinic Project-- The goal of this project was to establish a clinic that had low-cost, high-quality care in an accessible location. The Bill Selke Memorial Clinic opened in August 2003, achieving these goals.
Summer volunteers conduct six two-hour sessions with local secondary school students on the topics of AIDS/HIV; these students then become a resource to the community and are encouraged to share their new knowledge.
HIV/AIDS presentations are given by volunteers to large audiences, often in cooperation with local churches, schools, and community centers. These presentations provide basic education on HIV/AIDS information and prevention.
General health education mimics AIDS peer education: small groups of students are involved in discussion about malaria, diarrhea, malnutrition, HIV/AIDS, nutrition, hygiene and first aid. The curriculum is adapted to the needs of each student group.
The dispensary initiative projects to establish three-room medical facilities in extremely rural areas. These dispensaries will increase the accessibility to doctors and medicine. Our goal is to build fifteen dispensaries throughout the district, at a cost of approximately $3,000 each. |
