Title: Sevillanas
Location: Sevilla, Spain
Program: Universidad de Sevilla, Seville, Spain, Academic Programs Intl., Fall 2004
Description: This photo is from the Thanksgiving party my program threw for us, which included olives and flamenco music along with the turkey and pumpkin pie. In Sevilla, just about any party on a holiday calls for the Sevillanas, local dances based on flamenco, to be performed, and here the dancers are one of the program directors and one of the host mothers of a student. Though flamenco is an art form that takes a lifetime to master, almost everyone in Sevilla dances the Sevillanas, especially during the Feria in the spring. Sevillanas is also the term for women of Sevilla.

Description: I took this through a fence into a small cemetery while an old woman paid her respects to a deceased friend. It was three days before All Souls Day, and since the vast majority of people in Hungry are Catholic, almost every grave had been adorned with flowers.

Description: The shot was framed by the stunning red leaves of a Japanese maple tree in autumn. It shows a small shrine that I believe was used to house fertility idols. The shrine and the waterfall below are part of a beautiful Zen compound in Gifu Prefecture, Japan.

Title: From the Sky
Location: Cappadocia, Turkey
Program: Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey, Global Educ. Exchange Program, Fall 2004
Description: Packages sent from the U.S. took almost two months to arrive in Turkey, so I selected a birthday present that was more experiential. After visiting the region of Cappadocia to explore the underground cities of the early Christians, I decided I wanted to return and see the topography of this incredible region from the sky. I spent two hours of my 20th birthday in a hot air balloon, peering down on vineyards, stone houses, and the delicate patterns of wind erosion in soft volcanic stone.

Title: Mirando a mi (Looking at me)
Location: San Lucas Toliman, Guatemala
Program: Community Involvement Center, Summer 2004
Description: On the last day of my trip to Guatemala, I found myself wandering the rural village of San Lucas Toliman. The approaching afternoon rains had already darkened the sky, but I wanted to encounter a last glimpse into the heart of Guatemala. As I walked along one particularly quiet dirt street, I noticed a dark pair of curious eyes peering at me from behind a fence fashioned of irregular pieces of weathered wood. I stopped, knelt at the fence, and with equal curiosity, peered back at the young girl. Both of us looked at each other for a few moments across the fence with mutual fascination. I soon stood up and began to walk away, but realized that I couldnt leave such a beautiful image and experience to memory. Her gaze gives symbolic insight into the differences which separate cultures and the curiosity which inspires every traveler. I often wonder what she saw as she looked at me; a similar image, but a different face with a different story.
