Title: Pinot Gris, from Start to Finish
Location: Northrow Winery, Marlborough, South Island, New Zealand
Program: University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand, Arcadia University CEA, Spring 2004
Description: Thatís right, they do raise more than sheep in New Zealand. While sheep still outnumber people 10:1, the country also has a rapidly growing wine industry. The Marlborough region, on the northern tip of the South Island, gets more sun than almost any other part of the country, and consequentially has a perfect climate for growing grapes. The weather was still gorgeous at the close of fall, in June. Coming from the wet and cold city of Dunedin, it was hard to decide what was the best part of Marlborough, the sunny weather, or the dozens of vineyards offering free wine tasting.

Title: The Circle Game
Location: Yangshuo, China
Program: Peking University, Beijing, China, CIEE, Fall 2004
Description: Biking through the jutting mountains of Yangshuo, I photographed these students taking advantage of their southern China location. We had just arrived from Beijing where it was snowing and the warm weather was just one of the many qualities pointing to a wildly different country. The mountain in the background is called ëMoon Hill.í

Title: House of Flying Dagger Noodles
Location: Chengdu, China
Program: University of Melbourne, Melbourne, Australia, Spring 2004
Description: Itís always great to see the culinary novelties of the county fair. Here in Chengdu though, instead of funnel cakes and turkey legs, this young chef is reviving the century-old tradition of ìFlying Dagger Noodles.î Taking the freshly formed dough, he shaves at lightening speed perfectly uniform slivers of noodles directly into the steaming water. Itís a specialty of the region and takes special skill- not to mention aim- to get all the noodles in the wok. Cooked in minutes, the noodles will be served in a hot and sour beef broth, representing all the spice and flavor in the Sichuan province. Yummy!

Title: All Smiles
Location: Eastern Hungary
Program: Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Budapest, Hungary, Fall 2004
Description: This woman was raking the dirt outside of her house in the middle of the Hungarian countryside when I came upon her. I am not sure why she was doing that. Maybe she thought it looked pretty. When I got out of the car and asked to take her picture, she waved her hands and shook her head. She proceeded to untie her scarf and retie it more neatly. She then smiled as me as if to say, ìnow you can take it.î I donít know much Hungarian, but that didnít stop her from talking my ear off. The only thing I did understand was that she was 86 years old. That is quite a work ethic to be outside at 86.
