Math 423: Partial Differential Equations

Laplace, Heat, and Wave equations; transform methods; Sobolev spaces; elliptic, parabolic, and hyperbolic equations.

Grades:
The final grade for the course will be determined as follows:
40% Homework
30% Midterm Exam
30% Final Exam

Homework:
There will be a homework assignment each week, with the exception of the midterm exam week. All homework is usually due on Friday, one week after it is assigned. The homework is not pledged. You are encouraged to discuss the homework, and to work together on the problems. However, each student is responsible for the final preparation of his or her own homework papers.

Midterm Exam:
This is a take-home exam that will be distributed in sealed envelopes Friday, October 13. It will be due back Friday, October 20 at 2:00 PM. After opening the envelope you should work for no more than the next two hours. You may use the textbook or notes. Be sure and hand in all the work you do on each problem. Good luck!

Final Exam:
This is a take-home exam that will be distributed in sealed envelopes Friday, December 8. It will be due back at the end of Finals period Wednesday, December 20 at 5:00 PM. After opening the envelope you should work for no more than the next three hours. You may use the textbook or notes or old homeworks. Be sure and hand in all the work you do on each problem.
