In assigning final letter grades, your work will be weighed in the following manner:

The homework assignments for this course will be available a week before their due date on the website for this course. Homework is due by the beginning of class on Friday (note: there is no homework due the week of Thanksgiving). Please staple or otherwise fasten your homework together before you get to class!

There will be thirteen assignments in all, and each assignment will have twelve problems. Each problem will be graded 0 (little or no work), 0.5 (significant amount of work, but substantially incorrect or incomplete), or 1 (essentially complete and correct). For a problem to be complete, you need to show all important steps in your work. It is also to your benefit to write legibly and to clearly indicate your final answer.

The sum of your scores on the problems will be your grade for the homework assignment, and the sum of your top twelve homework grades will be your homework score for the course (i.e., your lowest homework grade will be dropped).

Homework is the most important part of any calculus class. They are your primary source of study material for the exams. The best way to study for a calculus exam is to complete your homework as it is assigned and then practice similar problems before the exam. Give your homework the time and effort that it deserves!

The midterms for this section will be in class. The first midterm is on Wednesday, September 27 and will cover Chapter 7. The second midterm is on Wednesday, November 15 and will cover Chapter 10. Both exams are closed book. See the honor code statement for more details.

You have the option of taking the first midterm exam on Friday, September 29 in BL 131 at 3:00 PM instead of taking it on Wednesday, September 27 in class. Note, however, that Homework #4 is due on Friday, September 29 at 11:00 AM.

The help sessions during the week of the second midterm exam will take place MTu instead of WTh, that is, on November 13, 7:00 PM -- 9:00 PM, in Sewell Hall 309 and on November 14, 7:00 PM -- 9:00 PM, in Sewell Hall 307. There will be no help sessions on November 15 and 16.

As a sample exam you may use the following selection of problems: 10.2.25, 10.3.23, 10.4.11, 10.5.39, 10.6.27, 10.7.33, and 10.8.23. The solutions to these problems will be presented in class on Monday.

The final exam will be a three-hour, cumulative, scheduled exam. Its location and time are listed here.

It is the policy of the mathematics department that no final may be given early to accommodate student travel plans. We will not know when the final in this course will be scheduled for some time. Therefore, if you should make plans to travel before the end of final exam period, and it turns out that the final for this course is after your scheduled departure date, you will have to choose between keeping your plans and receiving a zero for the final, or incurring the costs for changing your plans and taking the final at its scheduled time. Each of the TAs will hold office hour for an hour during the week before the exam. The schedule is as follows (all rooms are in the basement of Hermann Brown):

As a sample exam you may use the following selection of problems: 7.2.28, 7.3.21, 7.5.27, 7.6.17, 7.7.13, 9.2.51, 9.3.19, 9.4.25, 9.5.25, 9.5.34, 10.2.19, 10.3.19, 10.4.39, 10.6.17, 10.8.21. The solutions to these problems will be presented on December 8 and 17.

The exams have been graded and can be picked up outside HB410.
