Scientia (an Institute for the history of science and culture) was founded in 1981 by the mathematician and historian of science Salomon Bochner. Scientia provides an opportunity for scholarly discussion across disciplinary boundaries; its members and fellows come from a wide-range of academic disciplines. It sponsors an annual series of colloquia devoted to the exploration of a broad topic from a variety of points of view. These colloquia are open to the general public. Computer and Information Technology Institute (CITI) is a research-centric institute dedicated to the advancement of applied interdisciplinary research in the areas of high-performance computing, computational science and engineering, and information processing and theory. Our goals are to be a catalyst for research collaboration across school, department, center, and laboratory boundaries, and to encourage and develop close partnerships with industry, government funding agencies, and other universities. The institute's power lies in its ability to look beyond individual faculty members and departments and to support the creation of teams that can successfully leverage our key research strengths. From its roots in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computational and Applied Mathematics, and Statistics, or researchers from 17 departments from almost every school at Rice. The broad scope of the collection includes excellent coverage in art, architecture, history, literature, music, philosophy, languages, economics, social sciences, natural sciences, and engineering.

The collections and services of the Fondren Library are based on the philosophy that a library is more than a collection of electronic archive of important journals.

The library supports the instructional, research, and public service programs of Rice University, including its strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate education; the advancement of literature, science, and art; and the pursuit of excellence in all activities. The library is accessible to all students 24 hours a day and can accommodate up to 1294 scholars in group study areas and private study carrels.

The Digital Media Center's mission is to support the use of digital media in education, scholarship and creative expression. The DMC provides hands-on training, consults with patrons on digital projects, and offers access to the essential tools for creating digital resources such as web pages, digital images, digital video, digital audio, PowerPoint presentations, and animations. The DMC maintains a large collection of digital texts and images, mainly on CD-ROM. By using such resources, researchers can: perform searches that uncover relevant resources in vast databases, gain access to rare manuscripts and books that have been converted to digital formats, use electronic tools to perform systematic linguistic and textual analysis, compile concordances, and collate texts, and study images by enlarging particular details. The Digital Media Center also seeks to assist members of the Rice community in creating and using information in a variety of formats, offering expertise in editing audio & video, designing and maintaining websites, scanning texts and images and converting files to digital formats, creating and manipulating graphics, and searching and analyzing electronic texts.

Students have both on-site and remote access to the library's online catalog, indexes, full-text reference sources, and key technologies. In short, Fondren Library represents the academic heart of the campus. http://www.rice.edu/fondren/
