HOTELS NEARBY TO CONFERENCE SITE
The following
hotels are also available at a special conference rate. Specify
that you are with "CSDL Rice" to get the rate. The first two
hotels also have a continental breakfast included, unlike the others.
- Best Western Plaza Hotel Medical Center. 6700 S. Main.
Single or double room, $69 plus tax including continental breakfast
buffet. This hotel is a bit closer to campus than the others on
Main. Amenities: Indoor pool, hottub, fitness room. Tel. 713-522-2811,
Fax 713-522-2627. This hotel has no cutoff date for the conference
rate, in order to pick up those who miss the (extended) October
7 cutoff at the official conference hotels.

Rodeway Inn,
6712 Morningside Drive. $44.95 single, $49.95 double room, plus
tax, includes continental breakfast. Located about 20 min. walk
from the conference site. This hotel is the smallest and most economical,
so book early. We could not get a block of rooms. The hotel is set
up for self-catering: rooms have microwaves and fridges, and some
have small stoves (you have to ask for this). There is also a guest
laundry with coin-op machines. Transport info: The nearest airport
shuttle stop is at the Hilton Houston Plaza Hotel, 6633 Travis St.,
ca. 20 minutes walk from the Rodeway. With nice words, the driver
of the Airport Express shuttle can often be persuaded to take a
passenger the short distance from the Hilton to the Rodeway. If
you arrive on Friday night before or during the reception, you can
get off the airport shuttle at the Crowne Plaza and after the reception
we can take you to the Rodeway. There is no shuttle service from
the Rodeway to Rice but it is a pleasant walk, mostly through campus.

- Hilton Houston Plaza Hotel, 6633 Travis. Single or
double room, $95 plus tax. This is the best hotel near Rice, and
the rate is very heavily discounted. Call early for availability;
they could not give us a large block of rooms because of a local
event. The advantages to the Hilton are that in addition to 4-star
amenities, it allows "double-dipping" (both airline miles and
hotel points) and also double rooms are likely to be upgraded
to a two-room suite as most of their doubles are suites. Further,
it is the closest of the hotels to Rice (1 block from campus edge,
ca. 3 blocks or 10 min. walk to conference site). Tel. (713) 313-4000,
