This photograph was taken on a weekend trip to Florence. After climbing to the top of the duomo's bell tower in the main square, I was confronted with a breathtaking view of the city in 360 degrees. What fascinated me more than this wide angle, though, was the view straight down, onto the tops of the residential neighborhoods surrounding the duomo. The simplicity of the common red tiles and the chaos of the varying heights of the roofs was delightfully representative of the way Italian cities charmed me. I especially like some of the details in this picture that reveal crucial aspects of Italian life: open windows, balconies, gardens.
