Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
I have this weird rash / sharp pain / green mucus...
Let us stop you there. If you are concerned about a health issue that requires you to see a physician, you will need to consult Health Services. They are located in the same building as the Wellness Center, just across the hall. Refer to their Web site for more information, or make an appointment by calling (713) 348-4966.
What does the Wellness Center DO?
Good question! We offer information and tools on a variety of student wellness issues. We are the go-to place for all of your "I-want-to-know-but-I'm-too-embarrassed-to-ask" needs. We encourage Rice students to become "wellness-seekers" who not only avoid illness, but develop themselves in all health related aspects, including social, spiritual, and emotional wellness. We have a Wellness Library which loans out books ranging from avoiding procrastination to dealing with abusive relationships and everything (health related) in between! We also check out videos and pedometers, and many students know of us for our massage, acupuncture or nutrition services!
What if I need to get alcohol server trained?
Check out CHOICES, the on-campus alcohol training for Rice students.
Why don't you offer massage for free?
Economics. Our supply couldn't meet the demand, and we need to pay for our linen service. Our registered massage therapist does offer rates that are discounted for Rice students, and the Wellness Center believes that investing in your health is just that, an investment. Whether you save up for a full body massage, or enjoy a few chair massages it will definitely be money well-spent.
Acupuncture and nutrition consultation are free?! How do I make an appointment?
All Rice students are eligible for three free sessions with our dietitian(s). First appointments with the acupuncturist are free, subsequent sessions are $7. This is an incredible bargain, you should definitely take advantage of it during your time at Rice. To make an appointment, call the Wellness Center at (713) 348-5194. What if I want to work at the Wellness Center or get involved in student health issues?
Look for advertisements in the Thresher about open positions at the Wellness Center, or call us (x5194) to arrange to have an application kept on file. If you'd like to get some volunteer experience, check out the peer education organizations that are affiliated with the Wellness Center.
