The following is a detailed schedule of the College Leadership Workshop, along with a brief description of each workshop:
Schedule:
- 8:30 – 9:00 Check-In / Breakfast
- 9:15 – 9:30 Welcome / Introduction
- 9:30 – 10:00 College Application Timeline
- 10:00 – 10:30 Standardized Testing
- 10:45 – 11:15 Choosing the Right College
- 11:30 – 12:45 Lunch (RMC)
- 1:00 – 1:30 Financial Aid / Resume / Leadership / Tour*
- 1:45 – 2:15 College Essay / Interviewing / Volunteer / Tour*
- 2:30 – 3:00 Q & A / Financial Aid / Leadership / Tour*
- 3:15 – 3:45 Resume / College Essay / Volunteer / Tour*
- 4:00 – 4:30 Q & A / Interviewing
- 4:45 – 5:00 Evaluations / Closing Statement
*Whereas each workshop lasts 30 minutes, the Rice tour will last approximately 75 minutes, therefore overlapping over 2 workshop periods.
Workshops:
College Application Process / Timeline: Discusses the requirements and appropriate timeline of what to have done by each year in high school (when to start taking college entrance exams, to get involved in extra-curriculars, to start filling out applications, etc.).
Information about Standardized Testing: Discusses PSAT, SAT, SAT IIs, and ACT.
Choosing the Right College: Addresses how to choose the right college for each particular student.
The Financial Aid Process: Discusses FAFSA / ways to search for scholarships and scholarship opportunities, etc.
Writing the College Essay: Discusses writing the college essays.
Resume Writing Skills: How to set up a proper resume, with examples.
Interviewing Skills: Proper interviewing techniques. Mock interviews can be conducted.
Q & A Session with Rice Students: Talk about Rice student life, answer any questions about adjusting to college, etc.
Leadership: Discusses different leadership positions / leadership styles.
Volunteer - Getting Involved: Discusses ways of getting involved in Asian/Vietnamese organizations in the Houston community.
Rice Tour: Show campus, dorms, talk about Rice student life, answer any questions about adjusting to college, etc…
