UPA Club Sectionals, Austin TX, Sept 16
OVERALL RECORD: 1 Win, 3 Losses

Our season started out with a lot of new recruits who got lots of playing time at Sectionals this year while a number of returning players played with Spin all the way to Regionals. We went 1-3 this tournament. Not surprisingly, we lost in our matches against the club teams Houston Spin, Austin Buttercup, and Dallas' Weird Alice. However, the delight of the day came with our win against UT's Lady Marmalade. Both UT and Miss Red had rookie squads out that day, but Miss Red pulled ahead. We finished the day with an all-rookie point, where the rookies took the field and commanded in their new game.

Del Sol, College Station, Oct 16
OVERALL RECORD: 3-1, 2-2, 2-2 (co-ed)

Rice Ultimate sent three co-ed teams to this one day tournament at Texas A&M. At the end of pool play the Rice teams seeded into the one, two, and three spots for the playoffs. We were more amused than disappointed when all three teams lost during their first games in the playoffs. At least we had time to make it home for Olive Garden and a couple of hours in the hot tub at Holly Hall.

Harvest Moon, Fayetteville AR, Oct 29-30
OVERALL RECORD: 4 Wins, 2 Losses

Harvest Moon was the highlight of the fall season. Usually, the fall is a building time for Miss Red, but not this year. Miss Red finished the tournament in third place. We were very happy with our initial wins against UT's Lady Marmalade, Texas A&M, the club team Muggy Flora and Kansas' Betty. However, competing against the rest of the club teams was a little different. In these two matches we held our own and played with strength and mental toughness, but the experience and talents of these two teams were too much for us to overcome that day. Maybe next time. Here you can read a really great essay on our game against Muggy Flora and the Spirit of the Game written by Julia Baumann.

Celebracion, Austin TX, Nov 17-18
OVERALL RECORD: 1-3, 3-1 (co-ed)

This is a co-ed two day "tequila" tournament in Austin. Technically, we only sent one team, but some renegade "traitors" played with another team that had a couple of alums on it. The real Rice team only won one game during the tournament. We like to blame it on the tequila, but that actually didn't start until later in the day. In fact, a good person to ask about that would be Eric.

Savage 7 (Co-ed), Jan 19-20, Baton Rouge LA

We sent four whole teams to Savage 7. The senior team did well advancing far into the finals. They lost in a hard fought game against the Houston team. The other teams did well too, though I can't remember the records exactly. Since there were four Rice teams we all got to play each other at some point, making for some great controversy. Ray managed to suck up 'some' of his competitiveness when his team forfeited due to injuries against another Rice team. The games were wet and cold and miserable. No wonder the most exciting part of this tournament was playing Mao beside a warm fire after the first day of playing. I could tell you about Mao, but unfortunately, the first rule of Mao is that you don't talk about the rules of Mao. It's kinda like fight club, but without all the violence.

Mardi Gras, Feb 9-10 Baton Rouge LA
OVERALL RECORD: 4th Place (tied) 4 wins, 1 loss

GAME 1: Miss Red 13, Illinois 11
GAME 2: Miss Red 12, Notre Dame/LSU 5
GAME 3: Miss Red 13, Minnesota 7?
GAME 4: Miss Red 10, Georgia Tech 9
GAME 5: Miss Red 6, Georgia 8

Saturday: Pool Play!!!
Beautiful fields, beautiful sun, and IN-TEN-SITY was all Miss Red needed to sweep their pool on Saturday at this tournament. In the first game, Rice met 2001 National qualifiers, Illinois. Rice started off on fire with a 3-point run followed by head-to-head play for the remainder of the game. Illinois attempted a final push against Miss Red before the end of the game. Final score: 13 to 11 (Good Guys)

Game Two featured a Notre Dame/LSU combo team and Miss Red. With stead patient offense, Miss Red marched to a 12-5 win. The last game of the day pasted Minnesota versu Rice in a re-play of the Mardi Gras finals in 2000. Taking advantage of our "Blond Ambition" cup and solid zone handling, Rice took the game with a final score of 13 to 7.

Sunday
Following a very late Mardi Gras night, day two brought high winds and two Georgia teams. In the quarter-finals, Georgia Tech and Rice took turns trading downwind points. In the end, without a single upwind score, Rice walked away with a 10 to 9 win. In the semi-finals, Rice faced defending National Collegiate Champion, the University of Georgia Ho-dawgs in another wind-dominated contest. Rice and Georgia again pushed in the downwinders while struggling with the upwind points. Rice's stellar zone gave GA trouble while EZ went to "the spot" for multiple downing scores. At 8-8 the soft cap went on and Georgia answered with an upwind score followed by a downwind score to end the game.

Friday
Dreaming of luscious California fields, clear skies, and Maeve in her skimpy bikini, Miss Red departed for sunny San Diego in her normal haphazard fashion. The Rice women arrived at the airport with time to spare -- enough for EZ to analyze the sanitary conditions of the local Taco Bell and for certain members of the team to score free drinks from the oh-so-delectable airport clerk (It seems that Rice women and lonely, older men have some inexplicable affinity). After a somewhat inexplicable flight, Miss Red pent up some of her pent-up energy by throwing "zingers" in the San Diego terminal until an officer of the law informed them that they might "kill someone" with their frisbees and insisted the friendly tosses stop. We were lucky enough to befriend some men from HAR-vard as a way to pass the rest of the time. The Rice women eventually found their way to Arwen's and condo where they soon fell into blissful slumber. So far, all had gone according to plan... sort of.

Saturday
Miss Red awoke with a craving for protein, and soon scarfed down a crate of eggs, prepared by Catherine, for breakfast a la Gaston of Beauty and the Beast. Empowered and energized, the team headed for Frisbee Central only to discover that it had a first round bye. Miss Red used the time to her advantage. Catherine, Jamie and others made a great attempt to check out the Colorado School of the Mines and Harvard Men's Teams and stretch tight muscles at the same time. More reasonable minds stepped in to redirect the teams energies to practicing defensive strategies for use in later play. Finally the Rice women stepped onto the battlefield to combat their opponents, Chica from Chico State.

Rice started out strong, with its traditional "in the spot" approach, but Chica came back after the half with hard cuts (and nipples) to win the game 8-7. It was a disappointing, but good-spirited start of the day who did indeed hurt their solar plexi on those Chic(o) tits of steel, as Jane could attest since one of those breasts took her out. Even Alice, the queen of cutting diamonds herself was impressed.

Each team in Rice's pool had a third round bye. While some members of Miss Red used this free time to scout possible opponents, others exercised their flirting skills and attempted to pick up men. (Julia, of course, was appointed to the position of head flirter. Jamie Sue came in a close second as she made dinner plans with the future Rob Lowe of the B-movie world.) Catherine also made use of this spare hour to leave the fields and watch a different sport. Although Miss Red had a bye, she clearly had all sorts of play on the mind.

Mid-Afternoon, Rice met the Stanford B team and practically shut them out of the march. All Rice women made some key plays during this game, with Lisa coming through with some hot D and the whole team playing chilly O. Playing zone or man, Miss Red proved herself the victor.

Excited by the win, the Rice women hurried to the next game against the number one seed in the pool, Kali. Miss Red played super-intense Ultimate in the hour that ensued. Julia in-their-pants Baumann was all over the field, shutting down her woman at every opportunity. Seniors Alice and Casey also kept up the intensity, fighting for the glory of Miss Red.

Sunday
Sadly, all our games on Sunday were rained out except for the first one in which we dominated Walla Walla and successfully got drenched. Instead of playing ultimate, we met Jamie's actor who she befriended on a plane. He wanted more than anything to go out with Jamie afterward, even if by going out you mean skinny dipping.

Monday
On Monday we started out strong, with the same eggs we had on Saturday and a thorough house cleaning and plant repotting (shh, don't tell). After watching Humboldt (the H stands for high) beat GW, we prepared mentally and physically to show then who was boss. However, the

GAME 2: Rice L, Georgia W
GAME 3: Rice L, UNC Wilmington W
GAME 4: Rice L, Michigan W
GAME 5: Rice W, GW L
GAME 6: Rice L, Swarthmore W

At Terminus this year, we had a hot team. We were coached by Miss Alice who was sadly out with a broken elbow. Terminus is very large tournament with a weekend only for college teams. It also included observers as it attempts to mimic the atmosphere of Nationals as much as possible.

Saturday saw Miss Red come out on top of Dartmouth with hot D and Ooooo. Next we were toppled by the dominant University of Georgia. We lost two hard fought games to University of North Carolina at Wilmington and Michigan. Afterwards, we gorged on food at alum Em's house and hung out in her nicely heated pool with some beer. A great reward after playing some hard D all day.

After this refreshment, Miss Red returned on Sunday to beat up on GW. Reenergized and refocused, Miss Red prepared to eliminate Swarthmore. We failed to carry our rally all the way to the end. Down by two points, Miss Red rallied to tie Swarthmore in the soft cap to keep the game going. We lost the semi-finals match in the C bracket and prepared for a nice airplane ride home. The tournament's tough competition was sure to prepare Miss Red for the competition she was about to face in Sectionals and Regionals!

Sectionals, April 7, Houston TX
OVERALL RECORD: 1 win, 1 loss

Game 1: Rice 6, UT 13
Game 2: Rice 15, A&M 2

Bright and early Sunday morning, Miss Red emerged from their beds to return to the Nanotech fields, not for practice, but to dominate their UPA Section. After an intense warm up, Miss Red began her battle against UT. The two teams traded points in the first half, each battling upwind for the score. Luckily, no team members were injured in this match :).

However, the last part of the game saw UT's Lady Marmalade pull ahead for the victory. Miss Red battled back in their next game against A&M where they dominated and scored 15 points in a row. Miss Red took Second
