Hey, Frank, won’t you pack your bags
And meet me tonight down at Liberty Hall.
Bruce Springsteen

The building at 1619 Chenevert was originally built as a church then converted to an American Legion Hall before Liberty Hall opened there in 1971. It was a great venue for music and other events during the 70's. It became the hot spot after Love Street and Of Our Own shut down. It had a capacity of around 450, which offered a very intimate setting for some really great performances. The Velvet Underground appeared there in 1971. Bruce Springsteen played there in 1974 and the Ramones played in 1977. It offered a very diverse range of genres, from rock to country, blues to punk, comedy acts to plays. Two of my favorite memories of the hall was seeing Cheech and Chong perform and watching the play One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest. Cheech and Chong sold out eight shows. Tickets were $2.
