Statistical computing at Rice University is predicated on a Unix based mainframe computer system. A statistical server, VET, houses multiple statistical applications, data archives, and individual accounts. In order to have access to the VET server, it is necessary to obtain both a Rice Unix Facility (ruf) account and a VET account from the Rice Computing Services. Account information and an application can be obtained here.
As VET is a Unix server, a base knowledge of Unix language is necessary in order to employ the statistical packages found there as well as load and use relevant data. Some fundamental commands are provided in the following sites. A great deal of this information is provided on the VET Resource Page and consequently most questions about Unix can be answered here. Other links highlight specific Unix related issues.
