This page provides links
to the consultants as well as to a wider body of individuals
interested in statistical topics associated with both computational
and methodological issues in the Rice community. Three individual
links are provided below each with a particular goal.
Rice Statistical Newsgroup
The SCL has established a newsgroup focusing on a statistical issues across campus. The underlying goal of the newsgroup is to provide a medium to address statistical questions and problems and to create a forum for statistical discussion. To subscribe, one needs to set the newsgroup address in their newsreader. Once subscribed, questions can be posed to the group by emailing the subscription site which in turn will distribute the questions and topics to all members of the group. The newsgroups relies on the participation of the Rice community. In this sense, the more individuals subscribed, the greater the access to potential answers to common problems and broader discussion of statistical issues.
The Statistical Consulting Lab newsgroup can be found at rice.owlnews.stathelp. The newsgroup can be accessed via any of the news readers on the Unix system. For those who have not used these before an introduction, newsreader document , provides the necessary background to use the newsgroup.
Software and Computational Questions
Quantitative analysis is predicated on the ability to successfully employ statistical software. One of the central problems facing researchers is getting software to read and correctly analyze their data. Consequently, the SCL provides technical advice for those using the statistical packages housed on the VET system. The SCL will attempt to answer specific questions about these packages and their workings. Again, the particular problem should be outlined and then emailed to the following site identifying that it is a software issue.

Research Issues and Questions
One of the central goals of the SCL is to foster statistical research by providing theoretical and methodological advice to those using statistical techniques in their research programs. Individuals encountering problems associated with choice of proper statistical analyses, analytical questions, and requests for theoretical help should address their problems to the reseach oriented problem site. Research questions will be addressed given the availability of personnel and funding. The particular problem should be outlined and then emailed to the following site identifying that it is research issue.
