GAUSS Applications and Links

Using GAUSS on VET

GAUSS is a powerful matrix-oriented statistical package with a versatile programming language and many add-on modules to perform sophisticated statistical analysis. It is designed for both interactive and non-interactive (batch) uses. GAUSS is a versatile statistical package with almost the same level of functionality as the more popular packages such as SPSS or SAS. The program's capabilities are only limited by the programmer's ability to specify what sort of statistical test they wish to conduct. There are several add-on modules that minimize the amount of basic programming one would have to do but flexibility is GAUSS' strongest feature. Some of the add-on modules are Time Series, Maximum Likelihood, Linear regression, Quantal Response, Nonlinear Equations, Optimization, Loglinear Analysis, and Linear Programming. Hence Gauss has a wide variety of functionality.

GAUSS, however, is a complicated program and requires a good deal of background knowledge. If you are a novice, your best bet is to begin by going through the Getting Started with GAUSS link. This page will provide an indepth development of both the syntax and different elements required to create a GAUSS command file and produce the desired analysis.

Once having an understanding of the program, GAUSS can be employed in multiple ways on the VET server. Two will be highlighted here: Batch Mode and Interactive.

Batch Mode

Batch mode GAUSS uses a previously created command file or program and runs its in the background producing an output file. On the VET system a number of editors are available to create command file programs, Pico, aXe, Gnuemacs--these are detailed on the previous page under VET applications. Once a command file is created and saved, the program can be run in GAUSS by simply typing gauss and then the name of the program at the VET prompt along with a name for an output file. Using an example program entitled statistics, batch mode GAUSS would look like:

% gauss statistics > statisticsout &

GAUSS would then run the program and create an output file entitled statisticsout.

Interactive Mode

Interactive GAUSS is a graphically based version of the program which produces multiple screens: a listing or editor screen, a log screen, and an output screen all simultaneously. The program is driven by a menu which allows the user to pull doen and invoke these different screens. Here command files can be created editor and run immediately producing both a log and output files. Interactive GAUSS can be invoked by simply typing:

% gauss &

In order to run this graphical type of SAS, it is necessary to have an X window computer or an X window simulator program. For IBMs and IBM compatable, X32Win is recommended by Information Technology. For Macs, Mac X is recommended. These programs will allow the computer to employ the graphical elements of GAUSS. Before running GAUSS it is necessary to set the computing environment, this is described on the VET resources page.
