Graduate Studies at Rice University

The research interests of the faculty in the Department of Statistics cover a wide spectrum of topics in applied statistics from engineering, natural sciences, business, medicine, and social sciences. Graduate students have the opportunity for rigorous training in theoretical statistics as well as applied research in any of the above disciplines. Students may work towards one of the three graduate degrees offered: master's without thesis (M.Stat.), master's with thesis (M.A.), and doctoral degree (Ph.D.). Support available includes full tuition waivers, Rice fellowships, teaching assistantships, research assistantships supported by grants, and special awards for outstanding applicants. Fellowships range from $1,000-$1,500 per month.

Rice's relatively small size allows a close working relationship between students and faculty, including other departments. About half of our doctoral students are expected to take academic and half industrial positions. Over the past ten years, the primary research interests have been in nonparametric functions estimation, application of computer graphics to high-dimensional data analysis, time series, image processing, biostatistics and biomathematics, model building, productivity and statistical process control. A recent expansion of joint faculty has added a variety of research areas.

Requests for application materials should be sent to:

Applicants will be asked to provide Graduate Record Examination scores (quantitative, verbal, and analytical), undergraduate transcripts, and three letters of recommendation. TOEFL scores should also be included when appropriate.
