Rice Registered Clubs

The clubs listed below fall into the following categories:

STUDENT ASSOCIATION & GRADUATE STUDENT ASSOCIATION AFFILIATE ORGANIZATIONS
Affiliate organizations include those societies, clubs or the like which are formed because of the special interest of any particular group of students. All undergraduate affiliate organizations should follow the Student Association By-laws with regard to their establishment and organization. Graduate student organizations shall similarly follow the Graduate Student Association By-laws. Except for departmental organizations (i.e. honor societies), which may be funded by a department, and club sports, which may receive partial funding from the Club Sports budget, affiliate student organizations are not funded by the university on a yearly basis.

BLANKET TAX ORGANIZATIONS
Blanket Tax Organizations operate in essentially the same way as affiliate organizations, but they are funded in part by blanket taxes charged to students.

University Organizations are institutionalized organizations for students that receive funding directly from the university, and which are coordinated or directed by Unive rsity staff.

Registration for established affiliate and blanket tax organizations takes place in the Fall, after the beginning of classes and no later than 5 PM, October 1. Clubs not registered by the deadline will have the privileges and benefits of registered clubs suspended until registration is completed. Sports clubs not registered by the deadline are not eligible to receive funding from the Club Sports Committee.

Established affiliate and blanket tax organizations must register EVERY YEAR.

  • ADVANCE (Advocating Diversity and the Need for Cultural Exchange) is a dynamic program that provides students with opportunities to engage the greater campus in conversations of community and social relevance and to create a community environment that embrace individual differences and emphasizes unity of humankind.

  • AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF AERONAUTICS AND ASTRONAUTICS (AIAA) CLUB brings professionals in the aerospace field to Rice to speak to undergraduates and organizes study breaks, trips, and activities for Rice students interested in aerospace.

  • AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERS is the world's leading organization for chemical engineering professionals with more than 40,000 members from 93 countries.   • AMERICAN RED CROSS OF RICE UNIVERSITY is a humanitarian organization led by volunteers that empowers individuals to take control of their health and wellness through medical training services and provides relief to victims of disasters.

  • AMERICAN SOCIETY OF CIVIL ENGINEERS (ASCE) promotes civil engineering as a course of study and ultimately a profession to the students of Rice University. We sponsor club meetings with possible employers and concerning other topics relevant to the civil engineering discipline. We also perform various community service projects and social events, such as Habitat for Humanity and our civil and environmental engineering softball team.

  • AMERICAN SOCIETY OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERS (ASME) works with employers to bring professional mechanical engineers to Rice to speak to undergraduates. ASME also organizes study breaks, trips, and activities for mechanical engineers at Rice.

  • AMERICAN SOCIETY OF MINERALS, METALS AND MATERIALS (ASM/TMS) promotes the global science and engineering professions concerned with minerals, metals, and materials. Students in the field of materials science and engineering comprise over a third of The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society's members. Students are encouraged to take an active role in society activities, and they receive access to benefits at greatly reduced fees as compared to full members and nonmembers.

  • AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL seeks to increase awareness on campus regarding human rights abuses and encourages Rice students to campaign for physical and mental integrity, freedom of conscience and expression, and freedom from discrimination for peoples everywhere.

  • ARCHI ARTS organizes the Archi Arts costume party, held off campus in early spring every year, each time with a different theme. Second-year undergraduate architecture students help plan and stage this event.

  • ARCHITECTURE SOCIETY @ RICE is the student organization of the Rice School of Architecture. The main goal of the ASR is to foster interaction and collaboration within the school by improving communication. The ASR focuses on developing solutions instead of just identifying issues.

  • BASEBALL, CLUB is a competitive baseball team that competes in a national league against other college teams.

  • BASKETBALL, MEN'S CLUB's main goals are to get people playing basketball and to get a team set up to play other teams competitively. Over the summer the club team joined a league featuring other local schools in the area. September 21st will be our first game, and looking at the people we have interested in the team, we should be fielding a dynamic and smart team.

  • BEST BUDDIES is an international organization that works to enhance the lives of people with intellectual disabilities. The purpose is to facilitate friendships between students and persons with intellectual disabilities from the Center for the Retarded (CRI) through one-to-one matches and group outings.

  • BHANGRA TEAM, also known as Chowl Bhangra, is a national competing team that performs the traditional dance of bhangra. Bhangra is from a northern state of India called Punjab.

  • CARIBBEAN STUDENT SOCIETY aims to bring together both Caribbean students and members of the Rice community interested in the Caribbean, in order to share the various rich cultures of the Caribbean represented on campus with the Rice community. Our focus this year is to start new annual events, raise awareness about issues that affect the Caribbean, and do fundraising for our newly established Disaster Relief Fund.   • COLLEGE ASSISTANCE PEER PROGRAM (CAPP) is a network of trained peer advocates who work to address the mental health needs of the student body in coordination with the College Masters, Residential Associates, and the Rice Counseling Center.

  • DANCE - RICE DANCE THEATRE (RDT) is a student organization that promotes modern dance. Auditions are usually held at the start of each semester for dancers to perform in a concert held near the end of that semester. Students are involved in all aspects of the concert, including stage managing, sound managing, box office, program design, and advertising, in addition to choreographing for and dancing in the performances.

  • ENGINEERING - TAU BETA PI HONOR SOCIETY represents the entire engineering profession. It was founded in 1885 to recognize students of distinguished scholarship and exemplary character.

  • ENGINEERS WITHOUT BORDERS is a service organization dedicated to the completion of international engineering projects that address basic needs in the developing world.

  • ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) helps international staff members and students of the Rice campus to improve their English skills if they so desire. This also serves as a cultural learning experience for both tutors and learners.   • FRESH RICE BREAKERS is Rice's official club for breakdancing and hip-hop, bringing positive Hip-Hop to Rice since 1996. All b-boys and b-girls are welcome. No experience is necessary.

  • MOCK TRIAL is a replication of an actual real trial. Students are formed into teams consisting of three witnesses and three attorneys and are presented with a fictional case containing witness statements, depositions, evidence and a jury charge. Though the case is fictional the trial is run in accordance with the federal rules of evidence and procedure. Each team is responsible for learning these proper court procedures and for building and trying their case. In this way it directly replicates a real legal environment.
