About the Rice Women's Soccer Club

The Rice Owls Women's Club Soccer team had an outstanding Fall 2000 season playing in the TCSL. The new coach this year was Mark Doughty, a recent Rice graduate and former Rice Lads soccer captain. Many returning players combined with some talented freshmen to finish with a regular season record of 6-1-1 and an overall record of 12-5-1. The team won second place in the open division of the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) Collegiate Soccer Sport Club Championship tournament in Austin,TX. Two exciting wins this season came against long-time rival Texas A&M University.

Many players are graduating in May 2001; so, the club team is looking for new and talented players for Fall 2001 season. An extra challenge this fall will be maintaining the competitive level of club play during the inaugural season of the Rice women's varsity soccer team. The club team is also looking for a coach for the Fall 2001 season. If you are interested, please contact Sarah or Whitney.

The season begins on the first day of classes in the fall. The team holds practices for 2 hours each day, four to five days a week. All regular season games are on the weekends. In the past, we have traveled to Austin, College Station, and other cities in Texas for games. Most trips last one day; if the trip requires an overnight stay, the team account helps to cover the cost for lodging. Approximately half of our games each season are away games. The team makes a trip to New Orleans during Fall Break each year to take on the Tulane women's club team, and the team travels to the annual regional tournament in late-October and the national tournament in mid-November.
