Squash The Gap

March 6th, 2020 by nd35

Calling all squash ladies!

Squash at Rice can feel a little male-dominated. In honor of International Women’s Day on Sunday March 8th, I would like to invite you all to Squash the Gap, a women’s-only squash clinic on Monday from 5:30-7:30pm at the Rec. This is a great opportunity to try squash for the first time and come have some fun with the gals!

New Semester, New Programs!

February 19th, 2020 by nd35

Happy February everyone!

This semester our practice time has changed to Tuesday at 7pm. Practice is mostly focused on working on skills and technique through drills, with some match play and agility training worked in.

I am also happy to introduce a new program:

Match-A-Week

Every week, get randomly paired with a new opponent. You have one week to play the match and the results aren’t reported – the aim is just to play more matches! Email me (nd35@rice.edu) to enter the pool.

It’s a great way to sharpen up your squash skills before our Spring Tournament, which is coming up soon!

Fall Squash Tournament

September 27th, 2019 by nd35

Hey squashers! We will be having our first tournament of the year starting Saturday, October 5th. The tournament will take place over the course of a couple of weeks, depending on how many people sign up. Fill out this form if you would like to participate and I will create a bracket from all those who are interested. https://forms.gle/pggz6Sjqo8MUeLkk8
Then, I will send you the following information: who you are playing, their contact info, and when you need to play by. Matches are self-scheduled and self-refereed. As soon as the match is played, match results should be sent to me so I can update the bracket!
I will also send out some materials about the rules of the game so that everyone is on the same page and you guys can self-referee effectively.
Contact nd35@rice.edu with questions.

🙂

Practice Updates

September 8th, 2019 by nd35
Hi everyone,
We will officially be having practice at the Rec every Monday from 6:30-8pm and Wednesday from 7-8pm

PRACTICE INFO
  • Important — This week, Wednesday (9/11) practice will be moved to Thursday (9/12) from 7-8pm.
  • These practices will include different drills, lots of gameplay, and occasionally some agility training in order to make you guys the best squash players you can be 🙂
  • We encourage you to come as often and consistently as you can, but we understand that you guys are busy so we recommend at least one practice a week!
NEW PLAYERS
  • We continue to have a very wide range of squash experience, including plenty of brand new players who are still learning the rules, so it’s never too late to join!
  • If you are a new player and would like some one-on-one instruction outside of practice, please email me — nd35@rice.edu — and we can set something up.
EQUIPMENT
  • The Rec fortunately does loan racquets, but they don’t have a lot of them. This means that at a practices with high attendance, they often run out of racquets!!!
  • If you are interested, come talk to me about racquet recommendations. You can get a solid racquet online or at a sporting goods store for around $40!
  • Some reputable brands include Head, Dunlop, Wilson, Technifibre, and Harrow, but there are plenty of others. I personally have a Technifibre and a Wilson! 🙂

JOIN THE GROUPME!!!!! DO IT!!!

  • Big announcements will still be sent through this listserv but many updates/reminders/smaller announcements will be made through the GroupMe. Email me to be added or use the QR code posted on the bulletin board by the squash courts (not posting the link to join online for privacy reasons).
  • We want to foster a community and connect you guys to each other! The GroupMe is a space to share tips or send out a message on a Saturday afternoon asking if anyone wants to play a match. It’s a great resource for you so pleaaaaaase join!
Also, we’ll be having our first tournament very soon so keep a lookout for more info on that!
OKAY THAT’S IT. 🙂
Happy squashing,
Namita

Welcome Back!

August 27th, 2019 by nd35

Welcome back and get excited to play some squash this fall! We will be having two kickoff events this Saturday (08/31) from 2-4pm and Wednesday (09/04) from 6:30-8pm at the Rec squash courts.

No experience is necessary! This will be a opportunity to just come out, hit the ball around, and get to know each other. If you have a racquet, please bring it. If not, no worries – you can borrow one from the front desk!

Looking forward to squashing with y’all this year! 🙂
