Our Student Chapter

The Rice University / University of Houston SPE Student Chapter is the official student organization of the Society of Petroleum Engineers for the Houston metropolitan area.

Our mission is to provide each affiliate with opportunities for professional and personal growth through the SPE Student Membership Benefits, and the regular planning and execution of technical, social and sport activities. By doing so, we aim at improving our quality of life and that of the community in which we live, while extending and consolidating the presence of the SPE in academic grounds in the Houston area.

Regulations

The operation of the Chapter is ruled by general regulations set by SPE, and by a set of bylaws that are revised and approved each academic year by the Student Members in an organizational meeting. In addition, the SPE Student Chapter Operation Manual that is provided annually by SPE instructs on the procedures and forms that are needed to operate efficiently the Chapter.

Organization and Operating Calendar

A slant of Student Officers leads the activities of the Chapter under the supervision of a Faculty Sponsor and a Section/Student Chapter Liaison. Student Members also shape these activities with their opinion and active participation in the regular meetings and in any of the Committees of the Chapter (Publicity Committee, Nominating Committee, Membership Committee).

The activities of the Chapter follow an Operating Calendar that is flexible but yet observes important milestones each academic year:

September

	Chapter officers meet with the Faculty Sponsor and Section/Student Chapter Liaison to plan annual activities.
	An organizational meeting of the Chapter is held, with participation of the Faculty Sponsor and the Section/Student Chapter Liaison.

November

The president of the Chapter collects and submits to the SPE the renewal of membership of its Student Members.

April

Student chapter Members elect officers sponsor for the following year and report the new slate of officers to SPE Richardson. If necessary, the selection of a new Faculty sponsor is made and reported to SPE.

May

Student chapter President submits annual report to SPE Richardson, following the guidelines of the operating manual of the Chapter. Deadline for reception of reports at SPE is June 1st.
