SPE Student Membership Benefits

SPE is one of the most prestigiuous technical/professional organizations in the world and being an SPE Student Member is considered a noteworthy achievement by industry professionals and executives.
Student membership provides the opportunity to meet practicing professionals and active members in industry while still attending school.
Student Members may attend Society-sponsored meetings, conferences and section meetings at a reduced price or free of charge.
Student Members receive a free subscription to the Journal of Petroleum Technology (JPT), a monthly technical journal.
Student Members receive substantial discounts on textbooks, reference books and other Society publications.
Student Members may apply for financial assistance from Society-sponsored scholarship programs. Nearly $250,000 are awarded each year.
Student Members may use the Engineering Society Library, the world’s largest engineering library. To do so, contact the Engineering Societies Library, 345 East 47th St., New York City, NY 10014, or phone 212-705-7611.
Student Members are automatically upgraded to corporate member status the year of graduation, while still paying student membership dues for one additional year if desired.


Student Membership Requirements and Application Procedures

 To apply for membership, you must:

Be enrolled in a course of study leading to an undergraduate or graduate degree, in petroleum engineering, chemical engineering, geological engineering, petroleum technology, geophysics or other related fields.
Carry at least 30% of a normal full-time academic load.

New student members must complete the Student Membership Application Form, which can be obtained as a Word (.doc) or Adobe Acrobat document (.pdf) by clicking below in the corresponding link:

The application must be endorsed by an SPE member in good standing (usually our Faculty Advisor) and submitted to SPE along with your Student Member Annual dues, which are U.S. $12 for students in the United States of America.


Let us take care of your Application Form

If you study at Rice University or at the University of Houston, please send the Application Form with your information and your Annual dues to us, at the address given above. For other institutions in the Houston area, please include proof of compliance with the Student Membership Requirements. We will ask our Faculty sponsor to endorse your application, and then submit it to SPE for processing. Once your application is processed you will be assigned automatically to our Student Chapter, and entitled to the benefits and rights of our Student Members.
