SPE Presidential Presentation

The SPE Presidential Presentation is coming to Rice at the end of this month! Janeen Judah (SPE 2017 president) will give a SPE presidential presentation on January 31, 2017 12-1 PM at Huff House to talk about why she love the oil business.

Technical Lecture from Schlumberger about Produced Oilfield Water

We invite you to attend our first technical lecture in 2017: Produced Oilfield Water: Good Water versus Bad Water. Mr. Shahid Azizul Haq from Schlumberger will talk about the produced oilfield water in the lecture 6PM Tuesday, Jan 24th, 2017 @ SEW 305.

Movie Night

Our movie night is coming this Saturday (Nov. 19)! We prepared an energy-themed movie called "Switch: Discover the Future of Energy". Food and drinks will be provided! Your friends are welcomed!

Field Trip to Schlumberger

On November 10th 2016, we organized a field trip to Schlumberger oilfield service company in Houston. The attended student members were invited to visit the fluid lab and the rock lab.

SPE Rice Chapter Advisory Board Kickoff Meeting

On November 2nd 2016, our Advisory Board project was launched! We invited our advisors from Rice alumni and industry representatives to give student members advice and help them build personal connections. During our first kickoff meeting, Dr. Hirasaki gave a welcome talk to all of the attended members. Our President, Patrick, provided an overview presentation about our chapter and the Advisory Board project, followed by a discussion among all the members. The kickoff meeting was very suscessful, and we will provide more help to our student members.

Community Service - Project Pumpkin

On October 29th 2016, we hosted an activity booth for the Project Pumpkin event at Rice University. We provided a vivid hands-on illustration of a hydraulic fracturing process using jelly. Our booth attracted lots of children from all over Houston.

 

ChBE Fall Lecture & Networking Dinner

On October 6th 2016, we joined the annual Fall Lecture and Networking Dinner with guest speaker John Perez who was the owner of the Houston-based Cognascents Consulting Group. John shared his insights on entrepreneurship including his own experience as the founder of two startups. Then, John led an open forum discussion with other Rice ChBE Alumni from diverse career paths.

Evening with Industry at Rice University 

On September 14th 2016, we invited all the SPE members to attend the Evening with Industry event, which was a casual networking event for Rice engineers to connect with companies and organizations. Students were benefited from this event by learning about companies, meeting recruiters on campus, and chatting about various opportunities before the Career Fair event.

Resumania and Mock Interviews

On August 31st 2016, we hosted the Resumania to help students better prepare for the upcoming career fair. During this event, the industry representatives offered insightful suggestions on how to prepare an outstanding resume.

In the beginning of September 2016, we organized several mock interview workshops offered by professionals from industries. Mock interviews allowed students to learn and practice their skills during interviews, in order to be better prepared for the interview process with potential employers.

Guest Lecture on Schlumberger Oilfield Services

On August 30th 2016, we invited Shahid A. Haq from Schlumberger Drilling & Measurement to provide us an exciting lecture at Rice University. Shahid is an active Petroleum Engineer with 28 years of petroleum engineering experience. This talk gave a reservoir engineer’s perspective of Schlumberger relationship with the oil industry from exploration through production, and integrated pore-to-pipeline solutions for hydrocarbon recovery that optimize reservoir performance.

 2016 Social Event in Hermann Park

On July 31st 2016, Rice University SPE student chapter invited all of our SPE members to attend the picnic social event in Hermann Park. During the event, everyone had chance to meet and networking with fellow SPE members. In the meantime, we recruited more SPE members. Congratulations to our prize winners!

2016 SPE Rice University Student Chapter Officer Changever

On April 26th 2016, we successfully accomplished the office changeover. All the officers were nominated and elected. First of all, we would like to thank our previous president, Yongchao, for his great leadership in 2015. Here is our newly elected officers for SPE Rice Student Chapter:

 Field Trip to Smith Bits

On April 21st 2016, we organized an educational field trip to Schlumberger Smith Bits Facility. All the participants not only took a tour on the manufacture process of the drill bits, but also learnt the cutting edge research on the development of new drill bits.

 2016 Chevron Lecture on Energy

On April 14th 2016, SPE Rice Student Chapter also coordinated the 2016 Chevron Lecture on Energy by Rice University Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department. The speaker Kenneth B Medlock from Baker Institute presented the realities of energy transitions and the uncertainty that exists in the market today. This lecture provided our members with insight of energy future in current industry downturn.

2016 SPE Gulf Coast Region Student Paper Contest

  • On March 26th 2016, Rice University SPE student chapter attended the 2016 SPE Gulf Coast Region Student Paper Contest. Our members, Yongchao Zeng placed third in the PhD’s division, and Siyang Xiao placed third in the master’s division. Congratulations to them for the great jobs presenting their exceptional researches in Rice University.

SPE-GCS 2015 Reservoir Technology Forum

  • When: May 14th 2015
  • Where: Anadarko Conference Center, Woodlands, TX
  • What: The Reservoir Technology Forum is the annual event hosted by the SPE Gulf Coast Section Reservoir Study Group designed to disseminate knowledge and technology needed to achieve the many objectives of reservoir management, including understanding risk, increasing production and reserves, and maximizing recovery. This forum is a great opportunity to network with oil and gas industry professionals in an engaging and dynamic enviroment.

Roughneck Camp 2013 : SPE-GCS Young Professionals

  • Roughneck Camp (RNC) is an annual one-day conference focused on welcoming technical professionals, students, interns, and new members to the oil and gas industry. RNC 2013 will continue to provide a brief technical overview of the industry, professional development, and networking opportunities to about 350 young professionals and interns.

SPE Rice Chapter Kick Off Party

  • We are excited to announce that Rice University finally has a Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) chapter. It was officially initiated on April 5th 2013 and we are pleased to invite you all to the KICK OFF event the “ICE CREAM SOCIAL”!!! All SPE members are welcome to attend. Bring your friends (prospective SPE members) along as well for some delicious ice cream, tasty cookies and soft drinks. Come meet the chapter’s officers, other members and learn more about SPE.
