The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) is the
worldwide leader organization for practitioners of
petroleum engineering and other professions related to
oil and gas industries, with more than 50,000 members
affiliated to any of the 14
regions and 151 sections in which the society is geographically
divided.
The mission of the SPE is to provide the means
to collect, disseminate, and exchange technical
information concerning the development of oil and gas
resources, subsurface fluid flow, and production of other
materials through wellbores for the public benefit; and
to provide opportunities through its programs for
interested (and qualified) individuals to maintain and
upgrade their individual technical competence in these
areas. To achieve so, the SPE hosts international meetings
and exhibitions on a regular basis, coordinates the
publication of paper-based and electronic periodicals
and books, and
organizes short courses and section programs, among other activities.
Student Chapters and Academia
The
93
SPE student chapters that currently operate in 34
different countries underline the importance that the
Society gives to scholarship. Each student chapter
complies with standard regulations
to operate on a continued basis, and organizes academic,
social and sport activities for the benefit of its
members. The activities that each Student Chapter host,
add up to the general benefits
that SPE offers to its Student Members.
In addition, the SPE accredits academic programs in
Petroleum Engineering and Petroleum Technology in
universities and institutes of technology around the
world, and publishes on a yearly basis the Petroleum
Engineering and Technology Schools survey, which aims
to transmit information about students, faculty, courses
of study, and institutional size.
