Welcome to Sociology of Culture

This course examines the relationship between culture and society. On the one hand we will examine cultural production, evaluation, and dissemination from a sociological perspective. On the other hand we will discuss what constitutes the integration of culture -- broadly defined -- into our understanding of society. Both aspects of the field seek to understand the ways that culture is implicated in race, gender, class, nation, and other aspects of social identity and social change. Topics will include theories of mass media and ‘mass society’; art worlds; class, culture, and power; the ‘production’ of culture; taste cultures, cultural evaluation, and reception studies; culture and organizational behavior; macro-theories of social change; and current methodological strategies for the empirical study of culture.
