Urban Immersion 1999

From July 14 - 18, 1999 twenty incoming students and five upperclass student coordinators participated in the fourth annual Urban Immersion Program. The participants stayed at the Houston International Hostel in the Hermann Park Museum District and spent their days and nights exploring Houston. During the days of the program, the students split into two groups and each group participated in a morning service project. Service sites included the Depelchin Children's Center, the Chicano Family Center, the HIV Food Pantry run by the Houston AIDS Foundation, Star of Hope Women and Family Shelter, Catholic Charities, SEARCH, Project Row Houses, and Ben Taub Hospital.

The afternoons were spent in Museums and arts and cultural centers including guided tours of the Holocaust Museum and Project Row Houses, and a walking tour of the Menil Collection, Byzantine Chapel, and Sy Stwambly Gallery. The participants also heard presentations from a Holocaust Survivor, Professor Stephen Klineberg, and a representative from the AIDS Foundation Houston.

Of course, there were also opportunities to sample the diverse cuisine of Houston including Indian, Empanadas, Caribbean, Mediterranean, Vegetarian, Chinese, and of course, Mexican. The group also went to an Astros Game, a production in Miller Outdoor Theatre, and a nighttime tour of a youth crisis center.
