Alternative Spring Break Site Leader
Step 1 of 3 - Site Leader Information

Thank you for your interest in becoming part of the 2009 Alternative Spring Break (ASB) Site Leader team. Last year the Community Involvement Center advised a total of 9 ASBs that involved nearly 120 Rice University students in service, both foreign and domestic. We are looking forward to building on this successful year and are seeking the leadership to make that happen!

Alternative Spring Break experiences consist of a week-long service trip, in addition to pre-break training and post-break activities. You will get to work with many interesting people in unique environments and, of course, have fun. The success of each trip depends heavily upon the quality of its leaders. In fact, strong Site Leaders ensure the success and effectiveness of the program as a whole. There is much to be done in preparation for ASBs: fundraising, training sessions, planning on-site activities, and group meetings, to name only a few components. All of these pieces ultimately guide the group through a week of intense and rewarding experience. With each step along the way, you will be meeting great people who are committed to service and having a good time.

The Alternative Spring Break program is premised on finding dedicated, qualified, and motivated Site Leaders. Once individuals are identified, apply, and are selected, it is their responsibility to find sponsoring student organizations, if they wish to have access to the many benefits afforded these groups (ability to reserve rooms, eligibility for funding, etc.). Many student organizations, including Habitat for Humanity, RSVP, HuMed, and RPMS, choose to work with the Community Involvement Center in advance to identify individuals they wish to have chosen as Site Leaders. These individuals, however, must meet minimum acceptable standards set by the Community Involvement Center.

No previous ASB experience is necessarily required to become a Site Leader. The ability to work well with others and a commitment to service are the essential traits that make a successful Site Leader. Site Leaders commit to an intensive year-long commitment that begins long before the trips, with attendance at trainings and ultimately regular meetings with your groups.

Please take time when filling out your application; Community Involvement Staff members and the Student ASB Coordinator will be reading them thoroughly. This application is a very important part of the selection process, so include thoughtful, reflective responses. These responses will also be helpful in determining Site Leader pairs, where appropriate. We look forward to a fun and successful year of Alternative Spring Breaks headed by great leaders!

Completed Site Leader applications for the 2009 Alternative Spring Break domestic trips are due no later than 5:00pm on Friday, September 12.  The deadline for the international trip and early consideration for domestic trips is 5:00pm on Friday, April 25.
