C. P. Snow Student Fellows
2007-08
In the 1950s, C P Snow coined the term "two cultures" and argued that the breakdown of communication between the sciences and the humanities was an obstacle to solving major global problems. These Fellowships, named for him, are aimed at students who share with Scientia a passion for fostering interdisciplinary dialogue. The C. P. Snow Student Fellows will be responsible for devising and implementing a series of activities and events designed to encourage student interaction with the programs, faculty, and speakers associated with Scientia's 2007-08 Lecture series on the theme of "Memory". The Lecture Series will examine different aspects of memory, from neurobiology and neuropsychology, to a consideration of memory in literature, history, and anthropology. The keynote Bochner Lecture in the series will be given by Dr. Eric Kandel, who shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology in 2000 for his work on the molecular basis of memory formation. [For information on Scientia's current and past programs, see http://www.ruf.rice.edu/~scientia/]
The activities designed by the student Fellows will ideally be related to the lectures, such as reading or discussion groups on the topic of an upcoming lecture, and may include informal dining or reception settings in the colleges where lecturers, interested faculty and students can interact. Student Fellows will be asked to attend Scientia business and planning meetings once a semester to coordinate with the executive committee.
The 2007-08 Fellowships provide a stipend of $1000.
Qualifications include a dedicated, interdisciplinary perspective, organizational and motivational skills necessary for the successful implementation of new projects, and an excellent academic record.
Faculty nominations are solicited. Nominated students will be invited to submit an application. Please submit your nominations to Susan McIntosh ( skmci@rice.edu ) by Wednesday, April 11, 2007.
Interested students may also submit an application without a nomination.
Applications should include:
A brief (2-3 page) statement of your interdisciplinary interests, and some preliminary ideas about the kind of student-oriented activities you might develop during the fellowship year.
An unofficial transcript
One letter of support from a Rice faulty member
Applications should be submitted by Friday, April 20, 2007 to the Scientia Fellowship Committee, MS-8, with an email copy of the statement also sent to Prof. Susan McIntosh, Director of Scientia: skmci@rice.edu
