Welcome to the
Metabolic Engineering laboratory webpage of Rice University. This lab is headed
by Dr. Ka-Yiu San who is a professor in the
Department of Bioengineering and the Department of Chemical Engineering. He is also a
member of the Institute
of Biosciences and Bioengineering.
Our laboratory is
mainly concerned with the development of new concepts and novel approaches of
altering metabolic routes using recombinant DNA technology to improve
cellular activities and achieve more advanced production systems. The main
focus is on the development of a framework for the systematic analysis of the
cellular responses in regulating its metabolic activities upon precise genetic
perturbations. Understanding these responses is critical to design organisms
and processes for efficient and reliable manufacturing of gene products from
recombinant cells.
