Each semester RSVP soordinates
a one day community plunge in which hundreds of Rice faculty
and students work on community service projects throughout
Houston. Day-long activities inform volunteers about the needs
of the community, rescuit them for long-term service, and
strengthen the relationship between Rice and local service
agencies. Since 1987, volunteers have repaired and repainted
homes, sorted and boxed food, helped refurbish a shelter for
children with AIDS, served meals in soup kitchens and built
playgrounds in city parks. More than 500 Rice volunteers join
forces with local service agencies to do meaningful and effective
outreach work.
Alternative Spring Breaks
Each year, RSVP sponsors an alternative spring break in which
students may immerse themselves in an intensive community
service project at various sites domestically and internationally;
sites include Indian reservations and border towns near Mexico.
COOL Conferences
RSVP sponsors students to attend national campus outreach
conferences where students interested in service may exchange
ideas and attain new and innovative skills to organize campus
outreach projects. |
