UPCOMING EVENTS

Hunger and Homelessness
In the hunger and homelessness committee, we address less "glamourous" issues that impact a large population of our community.  The homeless population is commonly missed or overlooked, so join us on our campaign against homelessness and hunger!

Palmer Way Station
The Way Station began in 1989, when the vestry of Palmer Church was charged with developing a program to assist the homeless who gathered at the church for help. Five clients came in the first week, in January 1991, for coffee, water, instant hot cereal, juice, cheese crackers, and a cup of soup. Now, 17 years later, more than 1,500 clients a week (an average of 300 a day) receive a nutritious, filling, hot breakfast and medical, social, and religious support. The Way Station needs volunteers from 7:00am to 9:30am to cook, serve, greet, and clean up. Palmer Church is located across the street from Lovett College on  intersection of MacGregor and Main.

We need your help to make this incredible effort possible. This year, we are going every Wednesday morning with 2 shifts: 7:00am for cooking, 8:00am for serving. Come for a shift or the entire time. You will get a chance to have interact with homeless persons and learn about their lives.

Houston Food Bank
The Houston Food Bank is a private, non-profit organization that seeks food donation and distributes to local charitable programs. The Houston Food Bank feeds 80,000 people each week and 498,000 people each year. To feed so many Houstonians, they needs help sort donated foods that will be distributed to nearly 400 programs, such as food pantries, homeless shelters, and other nonprofit organizations.Currently, RSVP volunteers one Saturday of the month from 8am to noon.

SEARCH Homeless Project
SEARCH has become the leading homeless service provider in Houston, serving more than 10,000 men, women and children each year. They serve ALL segments of the homeless population: the sons and daughters of the welfare generation, the unskilled laborers, the substance abusers, the battered and abused, and the mentally and physically handicapped.
The hallmark of the SEARCH mission is its flexibility and focus on the needs of each individual. They have evolved into a comprehensive program that offers job training, job placement, housing, education, medical support, outreach and childcare, in addition to providing basic life saving services. This year, we plan on taking a tour of the SEARCH facilities and prepare hygiene kits, which will contain shampoo/condition, soap, wash cloths, lotion, and other common toiletries.
