Step Ahead Program
The Step Ahead program, sponsored by RSVP, gives Rice staff
the opportunity to learn how to use computers for basic tasks
such as word processing, email, and Internet. Classes are
held in Fondren Library, Monday through Friday, 11:00am-12:00pm.
We are greatly in need of volunteers to help teach the classes;
it's only a one-hour weekly commitment for the semester. Volunteers
are also needed to help restore and format computers to give
to some of the staff. Neither fluency in Spanish or in-depth
knowledge of computers is necessary to participate. If you
are interested in helping, please contact Gina Upperman (upperman@rice.edu).
Star of Hope Shelter Reading Incentive Program
Star of Hope serves the homeless men, women, and children
of Houston by providing shelter, training, and reintegration
opportunities. Stars of Hope is a Rice group that works with
the Women and Children's Transitional Living Center to provide
mentorship and tutoring to the always energetic and enthusiastic
kids spending 6-12 months at this center. We'll do art projects,
have a reading incentive program, and math activities with
the kids who range from 6-17. For more info contact Smita
Das (das@rice.edu).
Spring Fling
Spring Fling is a festival for underprivileged children in
the Houston area, with fun booths centered on learning. Volunteers
will be needed for planning the event as well as working with
the children by volunteering at the booths or serving as guides.
It will be held on April 16th from 12pm-4pm.
Crossroads At Rice
Crossroads is a mentoring group working with youths (11-15)
in various Houston communities. We will be holding an outing
for them on campus, giving them a tour as well as hosting
a BBQ. It will be held on early October and will last from
11am-1pm. |
