RPMS Programs
Past and current members have devised various opportunities to help you get acclimated to the medical profession. Find one (or many!) below that interests you!
Big Owls Program (BOP)
What is BOP?
Big Owls/Little Owls mentorship program (BOP) aims to pair Rice undergraduates with medical students and physicians in the Houston area in order to facilitate communication concerning various aspects of being a physician and how to get there. Through monthly meetings, we hope to encourage our students to learn as much as possible about strengthening themselves as medical school applicants, what medical school is really like, all of the different fields of medicine as well as their pros/cons, and general advice from those farther down the educational pipeline. Students will be organized into groups of five to ten based on residential college, year, and interests. Each group will be paired with one to two medical students and one physician.

Doctors Offering Shadowing Experiences (DOSE)
What is DOSE?
The Doctors Offering Shadowing Experiences (DOSE) program provides students interested in entering the medical field to shadow physicians whose professions they are considering. The opportunity to directly shadow a physician and walk in his or her shoes allows students to get an idea of how they can serve in the medical field and gain valuable insights into the medical profession. As the program normally collaborates with a range of specialists, we try to match students based on their interests and schedule availability. The DOSE program therefore provides a crucial experience for the development of the students' interests and passion for medicine.
How should I organize my schedule?
It is recommended that students dedicate at least a block of time (4-5 hours) each week to DOSE in order to maximize their clinical experience. Therefore, for students interested in shadowing, they should choose a year in which they can fit a block of time in their schedules, and can stay dedicated throughout their assigned semester. It is very important that students stay responsibly committed as their performance reflect the Rice Premedical Society and Rice University as a whole, and can affect the DOSE program's relationships and future collaborations with their physicians.
How can I apply?
The DOSE application will become available on OwlSpace later in the semester. More details will come soon.

Teacher Appreciation Program (TAP)
What is TAP?
Let’s face it, the professors at Rice are integral aspects of the pre-medical experience. RPMS members vote monthly to recognize one professor who goes above and beyond the call of duty. He or she will be recognized and given a small gift as a token of our appreciation for outstanding teaching.
