Spring 2002

The following is the schedule for Linux courses offered by the RLUG for the Spring 2002 semester. Material will be linked for each course as it becomes available. All courses will be held in Duncan Hall. Directions to Duncan Hall are available on our meetings page.

Note that these courses are being offered as a public service. This means that they are open to anyone who wants to attend. We are charging nothing for the courses, but invite any attendees to make donations to the Rice Linux Users Group as they see fit. Note that these courses are not Rice academic courses, and are in no way affiliated with any academic department of Rice University.

Introduction to Linux

"Introduction to Linux" is intended to introduce people to Linux, and reasons for running Linux. It is being offered in part in preparation for the Linux Installfest on 2 February 2002. There will be a Linux demo.

Basic administration for your newly installed Linux box

"Basic Administration" is targetted towards people who have just recently been introduced to Linux. It covers some basic programs, security, and package management.

General Applications

"General Applications" discusses the basic applications nearly everyone uses in Linux. These include office applications, e-mail (evolution and mozilla), and certain others.

Applications II (or "Avoid the Reboot")

"Applications II" is intended to cover a selection of applications that commonly cause people to reboot into Windows. These include games, media applications, and such office apps as gnucash. There will also be some mention of Wine, a program for running windows applications in Linux.

Rice-Specific

"Rice-Specific" covers material specific to accessing Rice-based computing resources from both on- and off-campus. This includes access techniques such as VPN and dialup, running applications via X, and doing work on your own computer.

Security: Beyond the Basics

"Security" covers a selection of security issues and applications for your Linux box. This includes setting up a NAT, running snort, and PKI.
