3rd Biennal Meeting
Conference Information
The 3rd Biennial Meeting of the Rice Linguistics Society will be held from February 21 to February 22 in Houston Texas. The theme for this year's meeting is "Theoretical Contributions from Less-Commonly-Studied Languages and Language Varieties". Presentations will address a variety of topics, but the general focus will be on instances in which less-commonly-studied languages contribute to creating a more comprehensive view of linguistics. Both members of the Rice community and the greater community are encouraged to attend. In particular, we expect this conference to interest those involved in language work, dialectology, sociology, and anthropology.
Information for presenters
Schedule
Talks will be scheduled for 20 minutes, with 10 minutes afterward for discussion and questions. Our presentation schedule isn't yet finalized, but we plan to end by 2:00 on Sunday to help facilitate travel out of Houston. If your travel plans require you to leave early, let us know, so we can be sure to schedule your talk at a time when you will be present. The schedule is available here.
Travel information
Both Bush International (airport code IAH) and Houston Hobby (airport code HOU) airports are near Rice, with Houston Hobby being a bit closer. Shuttles run from both airports to hotels near the university, and reservations from both airports can be made at the following website: www.supershuttle.com.
If you are interested in trying to share a shuttle reservation with fellow presenters, please let us know your flight plans, and we will see if it is possible to match anyone up.
Lodging information
Our conference space is on Rice's campus, so for accommodations, we recommend the following website: http://explore.rice.edu/explore/Area_Hotels1.asp.
Please let us know where you will be staying, as we are planning to pick presenters up
and bring them to the conference. Additionally, if any presenters are interested in sharing a room, let us know about this as well, and we will try to facilitate matches.
Registration information
Currently, we are not planning on doing any sort of advance registration. The registration fee of $10 can be paid in cash or with a check. If you need a receipt, we will be able to write one out for you at the time of the registration. The fee is intended to help us offset the cost of coffee breaks and meals. We will be providing continental breakfast on both Saturday and Sunday, a barbecue style dinner on Saturday, and a lunch on Sunday.
The conference will be held in Room 117 of the Humanities Building on Rice's campus. A schedule of the presentations will be announced soon. The conference fee is $10, and goes towards continental breakfast and coffee breaks. While it is not required, if you intend to attend the conference, we would appreciate you e-mailing us at rls '@' rice.edu, so we can better estimate attendance.
