| The hub nuts on the R51/2 have smaller
pin holes than all of the other ’51-’69 bikes, so the standard hub nut
tool will not fit, even though catalogues indicate that the tools will
fit. The easiest solution to the problem was to drill out the holes with a
drill press to the larger size used on R51/3 and later bikes. I’m glad I
had the larger pin size because it took quite a bit of pounding with a
16oz. hammer to get the hub nuts off. I used reproduction hub nuts to
replace the original. I discovered that the holes for the axle in the
reproduction hub nuts were not centered, which caused the wheel bearing
stack to bind when everything was installed and tightened up. If you use
the reproduction hub nuts, be sure to check this out. On Vech’s advice I replaced the original wheel bearings with the modern sealed equivalent (above right). |
