Counselors-in-Training FAQ

What is the CIT program?

  • The goal of the Counselor-In-Training (CIT) program is to provide 13 to 16 year olds with the opportunity to be mentored by bright and charismatic college-aged counselors and staff and to learn the leadership skills that are necessary for them to act as role models for children younger than themselves. CITs will be assigned to a specific group for the duration of the session, and through hands-on experience, will have the opportunity to interact with counselors and instructors in the operation of the Summer Youth Activity Program. CITs will have an extensive amount of direct interaction with program participants and as such should be friendly and approachable.

Do CITs have to pay registration fees?

  • CIT’s do not have to pay registration fees. However, there is a $150.00 fee associated with becoming a CIT.  This is largely due to costs associated with training.

What are the benefits of becoming a CIT?

  • In addition to being able to partake in a wide array of SYAP activities, becoming a CIT is an excellent opportunity for teens to gain leaderships skills and practical experience. By interacting with both counselors and participants, CITs develop communication skills, build self-confidence, enhance their sense of personal responsibility, and have fun. CITs also attend a training session to become CPR and First Aid certified.

How long is the CIT program?

  • The session is six weeks long. All CIT’s must commit to working all 6 weeks of SYAP.
    Session: June 18 - August 3
We will not operate the Summer Youth Activity Program during the week of July 4, 2012.

What are the program hours?

  • CITs participate in program activities from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

What sort of training do CITs receive?

  • CIT’s will complete a training that prepares them for the day to day activities associated with SYAP. Each CIT will become familiar with SYAP Policies and Procedures, and will have an opportunity to be certified in First Aid and CPR.
