General Information:

  • You may pay via credit card on-line. If you need to pay with check or cash please come to the Recreation Center second floor office during business hours, Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.—4:30 p.m.
  • You may need to create an account with SignMeUp.com to use additional features. This is entirely FREE; no extra charges will ever be added to trip prices for use of this service. Creating an account is optional.
  • All participants must leave Rice campus as a group.
  • Pre-trip meetings are required.
  • Registration is open to all Rice Students, Faculty, and Staff members.
  • As of September 25, 2009 all participants must be current members of the Recreation Center.
  • Each trip has minimum and maximum participant numbers that need to be met.
  • All participants on ROPE events are required to have health insurance. Participants will be asked for their insurance information during registration.
  • ROPE does not offer refunds or transfers of registration.

Detailed Trip Descriptions

Coastal Sailing on Galveston Bay, September 12
Step up to the challenge of sailing a beautiful 38-foot sailboat off Kemah, on Galveston Bay while savoring the effects of this unique "hydro-therapy". Whether you look forward to just kicking back and enjoying an afternoon or trying your hand at the helm and with the sails, this trip is for you. The experience will be hosted by trans-Atlantic sailor Captain Dave McCabe of Blue Marlin Sailing. We will depart Rice University at noon on Sunday, September 12th, spend all afternoon on the water, and return to campus by around 7:00 PM. Transportation, snacks, and sailing costs included.

Canoeing the Armand Bayou, September 19 + Pre-trip Meeting
Houston is surrounded by beautiful parks and waterways boasting numerous outstanding paddling trails, and on Saturday, September 19th, ROPE will be hosting a canoeing day trip to Armand Bayou. This is an exciting location where alligators have been spotted and fish nearly jump aboard your boat.  No experience is necessary, so take some time away from homework and come spend the day paddling, picking up new skills, relaxing, and viewing the aquatic wildlife. Plan to depart Rice by 10:00 AM and return by 6:00 PM. Transportation, canoeing equipment, snacks and access fees included. MANDATORY pre-trip meeting Wednesday, September 16th from 6:00-7:00 PM.

High Ropes Course Challenge, October 4
Take risks, push your comfort zone and challenge yourself at the brand new high ropes challenge course at Bearkat Camp in Riverside, TX.  The course features traversing and climbing elements through the trees and over a beautiful lake that will be sure to make this an exciting and unique experience. All skill levels welcome.  Plan to depart from Rice at 10:00 AM and return around 5:00 PM on Saturday, January 17th.  Transportation, lunch, and challenge course fees included.

Beach Trip to Port Aransas, October 11-13+ Pre-trip Meeting
Join ROPE for a 3-day beach getaway where you will have opportunities to surf, surf kayak, camp on the beach, and try your hand at fishing (must bring personal gear).  Port Aransas is located north of Corpus Christi, TX and boasts incredibly clean beaches and perfect waves for all skill levels. Plan to depart from campus at 9:00 AM on Sunday, October 11th and Return around 6pm on Monday, October 13th.  Transportation, beach and camping equipment, access fees and meals included (bring $ for dinner on the way home). MANDATORY pre-trip meeting Wednesday, October 7th from 6:00-7:00 PM.

Canoeing the Buffalo Bayou, October 17 + Pre-trip Meeting
Houston is surrounded by beautiful parks and waterways boasting numerous outstanding paddling trails, and on Saturday, October 17th, ROPE will be hosting a canoeing day trip to Buffalo Bayou. Navigate through Houston’s first paddle trail while keeping an eye out for egrets, heron, turtles, and the occasional alligator.  No experience is necessary, so take some time away from homework and come spend the day paddling, picking up new skills, relaxing, and viewing the aquatic wildlife. Plan to depart Rice by 10:00 AM and return by 5:00 PM. Transportation, canoeing equipment, snacks and access fees included. MANDATORY pre-trip meeting Wednesday, October 14th from 6:00-7:00 PM.

Rock Climbing at Reimer’s Ranch, October 24-25 & November 7-8 + Pre-trip Meeting
This trip is designed for climbers of all experience levels. We will set a variety of climbs ranging from 5.5 to 5.10's based on the experience level of trip participants. Reimer's ranch is located about an hour west of Austin along the Pedernales River in the beautiful Texas Hill Country. We will leave from Rice at 8:00 AM on Saturday, climb all afternoon, camp overnight at Pedernales Falls State Park, then get back up on the rocks Sunday morning. Plan to be back on campus by around 8:00 PM on Sunday night. Transportation, meals (bring $ for dinner on the way home), park fees, climbing gear, and camping gear included. MANDATORY pre-trip meetings on Wednesday, October 21st (for trip on 10/24-25) and on Wednesday, November 4th (for trip on 11/7-8) from 6:00-7:00 PM.
