Outdoor Adventure Center and Equipment Rentals

Stop by the Outdoor Adventure Center located in Room 111 in the Gibbs Recreation Center. We rent top of the line equipment for camping, backpacking, canoeing and kayaking. We have an educated staff on hand as well as maps and guidebooks to help you plan your next adventure. Reservations can be made by most weekends (excluding fall break, spring break, and spring recess) by emailing us at ropegear@rice.edu or by phone at (713) 348-HIKE. We offer extended rentals over the winter and summer breaks. All rentals require a $20 deposit in addition to the rental fees. The deposit will be returned when all equipment is brought back undamaged, dry, clean, and with no missing parts.

Rental Equipment Policies

• Rice University assumes no responsibility for accidents or injuries resulting from the use of rented equipment.
• One person may not rent out gear for an entire group. Each individual may only rent equipment for one person.
  
• Every renter is required to leave a $20 late/dirty/damaged/wet deposit at the time of the rental. If the equipment is returned on time, dry, clean and undamaged, the deposit will be returned. If the equipment is returned wet, dirty or damaged, the renter will lose the entire deposit and may be subject to additional cleaning and repair fees.
  
• The renter will incur additional charges if repairs to the wet, dirty or damaged equipment cost more than $20. This includes the cost of materials required to fix the items plus a repair shop fee of $15 per hour. If equipment is damaged beyond repair, the full retail value of the item and shipping costs will be charged.
  
• The renter will be charged $1 per item per day for late equipment until the equipment is returned. The renter will be charged for the full retail price of the equipment if it is not returned within three (3) weeks of the scheduled due date.
  
• All fees due to the rental center must be paid within two weeks of the date the renter is notified. After two weeks, the renter will lose the deposit. If charges equal more than $20, the renter will be charged for the balance. The renter’s student account will be charged if payment is not made prior to the end of the semester.
• All fees and deposits must be paid by cash (exact change only) or check made payable to Rice University.
