PROGRAM INFORMATION

SYAP Kite day

Unlike other sport programs, the Rice Recreation Center's Summer Youth Activity Program seeks to expose our participants to a variety of sport and recreational activities, develop recreational skills, and promote social growth. It is our intent to provide a broad and varied program of sports and leisure activities to our participants. Activities are designed to improve skills, promote interaction among participants, and encourage the development of a lifetime program of recreation participation and enjoyment.

Our staff of instructors and counselors consists of students from Rice and other institutions who are led by a professional staff trained in education and recreation. It is our goal to provide each participant with age appropriate instruction and an exciting and memorable experience.

FACILITY LOCATION

All sessions will be held on the Rice University campus at the Gymnasium Building. The gym is located inside gate entrance #8 (Stockton Street) off University Blvd. (The gym is the first large brick building on the right.) Drop participants off in front of building (north side). Participants should be signed out/picked up at the same location. Participants in the late activity program (4:15-6:00 p.m.) must be signed out at the east gym by the parent or the guardian.

Need a campus map? An online version is available.

What should my child bring?

Participants should dress in casual summer clothing and tennis/gym shoes (non-scuffing soles). Participants should not wear sandals or other open-toed shoes. Each child should bring a swimsuit, towel and sack lunch daily. While complimentary refreshments and snacks will be provided during the day, a consessions stand will be open during the afternoon break and late activity program. Please mark all personal items and avoid sending expensive or fragile items. Participants should not wear jewelry. Rice University and its employees will not be responsible for any items that are lost or stolen.

RULES

A child may not leave with anyone other than the person(s) authorized on the registration form unless a written notice is received from the parent/guardian.

A child may not leave the program early unless a written notice is received from the parent/guardian. If a parent/guardian fails to pick up their child(ren) by 4:15 p.m. an additional fee of $20.00 per each 15 minute increment will be charged.

We reserve the right to revoke the registration of any child who consistently disrupts normal activities. While this is a rare occurrence, it is important to note that consistent disruptions diminish the experience of the other participants. No refund will be made if a child is dismissed from the program. Children missing the program for reasons other than medical, will not be allowed to make up missed sessions. Split sessions are not available.

For information regarding sport specific programs (baseball, basketball, football, soccer or volleyball), visit the Athletic Department.

ADMINISTRATIVE INFORMATION

Due to administrative costs, a $25 fee is charged for transferring between sessions. Transfers must be done in person at the Recreation Center Office, located in the Gym, at least three working days prior to the start of the session. The transfer fee must be paid at the time the request is made. Transfers are based on space availability and are made at the discretion of the Recreation Center Staff. Children may give their spots only to siblings or step-siblings. Programs are not transferable to anyone outside the immediate family. Children missing days for reasons other than medical, will not be allowed to make up missed sessions. Split sessions are not available.

Refund Procedures

The Deposit is non-refundable. The refund policy is applied uniformly. All refund requests must be submitted in writing and received by the Recreation Center on or before a date still to be determined.

Abscenses

Refunds are not available for vacations, special events, short-term illnesses of four days or fewer, or other personal commitments that prevent attendance.

Extended Illness

A refund may be available for an extended illness of five or more consecutive program days. A doctor's note and written note from the parent or guardian explaining the situation must be received within eight working days from the first day of absence. Upon review, participants may receive a $25-per-day refund for the unused days.
