Interviews for trip leaders for the 2007-2008 school year will be on Wednesday, April 11th, 2007. Turn in your Instructor Candidate Statement to set-up an interview time. Other interview dates are available. Graduate students, undergraduate students, and faculty/staff encouraged to apply. We are looking for a variety of experience levels.

What is an Adventure Trip Leader?
Trip Leaders are the heart of this Outdoor program. Adventure Trip Leaders will have
the most direct contact with the Rice participants. While this job carries with it a
lot of inherent risks, there are also many benefits. It is a great way to get outdoors,
learn new skills, and help others do the same.
An effective trip leader is a person who can simultaneously manage risks and help the participants enjoy their experience.
Outdoor Program Manager Responsibilities:
Manage program implementation, participant outcomes, site safety and security, equipment
and staff. Keep current records of staff certifications, objectively assign the appropriate
trip leaders to trips, assist with trip planning, assist with trip leader responsibilities,
develop calendar, update Outdoor Programs marketing, and assist with equipment cleaning and
organization and other projects as interested and assigned.
Lead Trip Leader Responsibilities:
Ensure safety of the participants and staff during events and planning. Plan logistics of
trip or workshop, which may include pre-trip meeting, transportation, equipment and food,
and course wrap-up. The Lead Trip Leader is responsible for staying within the guidelines
of Rice Outdoor Programs and being familiar with the trip area. Share learning goals and
roles and Responsibilities with the Assistant trip leader(s). Disseminate, collect, and
review relevant participant forms. Inspect equipment before use. Conduct a safety briefing
prior to the activity. Manage program implementation, participant outcomes, site safety and
security, equipment and staff. May assist with trip and calendar development and other
projects as interested and assigned. Help the participants enjoy and learn from the experience.
Submit completed program file to the assistant Director of Outdoor Programs.
Assistant Trip Leader Responsibilities:
Assist in the safety of the participants and staff during events and planning. Attend necessary
pre- and post-program meetings. Assist the Lead trip Leader during the planning stages of a trip or
workshop. Review relevant manual sections before the event and ensure safety guidelines are met.
Share learning goals and roles and Responsibilities with the Lead trip leader. Help the participants
enjoy and learn from the experience.
