Disc Golf
All participants are required to complete a waiver of liability form each year. All participants in intramural sports activities assume the risk of injury. Rice University, its employees and agents shall not be liable for injury to person, loss, or damage to personal property arising from or in any way resulting from participation in the intramural sports activities.
Intramural Sports Disc Golf rules will be conducted under the PDGA laws (pdga.com) of the game with the following additions, exceptions and clarifications.
Tournament
STARTING THE GAME: Three players constitute a team. The teams check in with the registration/staff table at the tournament to confirm their entry. The Tournament Director will then give each team their hole assignments. After the rules and event announcement each team will go to their position. When the shotgun (pistol, horn) is fired play may begin.
LENGTH OF THE TOURNAMENT: The tournament will be 18 holes (9 twice at Rice) long. See 'EXCESSIVE TIME.'
SCORING: In the Scramble Tournament all three players have one score per holes as defined in TOURNAMENT- RULES. All scores must be correct on the score card and signed by all included players following the match.
League
STARTING THE GAME: Two players constitute a team. The teams should play the others in their pool as scheduled. Make sure that correct scores are kept during the match and turned in as soon as possible to ims [at] rice.edu.
LENGTH OF THE MATCH: Each match will be 18 holes (9 twice at Rice) long. See 'EXCESSIVE TIME.'
SCORING: Participants play as individuals and turn in each individual score. After one matches handicaps (80% system) will be used to modify scores of successive matches. Standings, scores and adjusted handicaps will be posted on the website and on the Intramural Sports Board in the gym each week. All scores must be correct on the score card and signed by all included players following the match. These are used in case of later score disputes.
General
The person and/or team with the lowest score after any scoring adjustments is made the winner. Count the amount of throws from the first throw at the teeing area to each successive throw until the disc is in the hole (basket) for every hole. Sum up all the holes scores for your total score. See the Intramural Sport Staff for any rule assistance.
SUBSTITUTIONS: Teams are allowed one substitute which needs to be approved by the Tournament/League Director only to be used in unavoidable circumstances. One or two players of a team coming late may enter the tournament/match at any time as long as the tournament/league staff is notified.
EXCESSIVE TIME: A maximum of 30 seconds is allowed for a participant to make a throw after:
- Previous team player has thrown
- Playing area is free from distractions/obstructions
COURTESY: Players should follow any manner which does not distract and/or taunt opponent. Not doing so indicates a violation of courtesy.
ORDER OF PLAY: The player who is furthest from the hole should be given the away which mean they throw before others. The away practice should occur during the match. Those with the lowest score on the previous hole throw first on the tee. A tie is broken by giving the away to the person who was lowest on the prior hole(s) of the previous.
EQUIPMENT OF PLAYERS: Players are required to wear shoes. Discs will be provided to those who do not have a legal one with them (we may not have enough for all). All discs must meet 1998 PDGA equipment standards. If they do not they will not be allowed in play. Those found to be using illegal equipment will be disqualified. Also according to PDGA rules, participants can not use any artificial devices in play. Intramural Sports' Staff has the right to disallow any other equipment which may be deemed harmful.
THE COURSE: All matches will be held on the Rice University Disc Golf Course unless its conditions insist an alternative. This will be announced to the participants prior to the event/league. Anyone/Anything found to be damaging to the course will be disqualified and/or face judicial actions.
FORFEITS: Not attending the tournament after prior entry is a forfeit after the other teams have finished two holes. Not showing up for a match is a forfeit and excludes a team from the League Tournament. League participants can play a match with one player of their team, yet can only tend for the individual points. The team points will be forfeited for the match unless there is a substitute (*see SUBSTITUTION).
STANCE AND OBSTACLES: The stance should not be more than 12" from the spot where the disc lay. One foot must remain on the ground during the disc release. If any obstacle is in the way of a throw the player may move 12" away from the obstruction. If a disc becomes unable to retrieve then the player must +1 to their score and use another disc. If they do not have one, nor anyone has one for them to borrow, then the match will be forfeited. Discs can only be moved from areas of poor conditions if your opponents or the Tournament Director deem the area unthrowable.
TEEING OFF: On the first tee off teams flip a disc to see which team will tee off first. After the first tee follow the away courtesy (* see ORDER OF PLAY).
OUT OF BOUNDS: At various locations, noted on the course and scorecard, there are out of bounds areas. All roads, around the rugby field, and around the powder-puff field are out of bounds. Add +1 to your score if you land out of bounds. You may play from the out of bounds unless traffic is obstructing or games are in progress in the areas. If you can not play from OB then get your disc and choose an inbounds spot nearest to where the disc flew OB and throw from that spot. Avoid throwing from the road as much as possible.
