How to Keep Fit in the Summer – Beat the Houston Heat!
Love to work out outdoors but hate the way Houston summer heat beats you down? Try out a few of these tips to keep you looking good and feeling great – despite that heat and humidity!
The Right Stuff – Inside and Out
- Drink plenty of water throughout the day – don’t wait until you’ve started working out to get hydrated.
- Drink water before, during and after your workouts.
- When working out, wear lighter clothing that allows your body to breathe.
- Eat healthy, balanced meals that include plenty of vitamins and minerals, this will minimize losses due to high heat and sweat rates.
Keep It Short and Simple
- Avoid overheating by breaking the workout into smaller chunks.
- For those longer workout sessions, take plenty of breaks.
- You don’t need as much warm up for cardio in the summer.
- Check your heart rate during exercise to ensure you are staying in your heart rate zone.
Location, location, location!
- Try out circuit training with weights or resistance bands for a heart pumping workout instead of cardio outside.
- Add resistance training inside to supplement your overall fitness plan.
- Try a group fitness class in the Rice Rec Center for cardio without the heat.
- Avoid outside workouts during high traffic times, high ozone levels, or CO2 outside.
- Avoid being outside from 10am-2pm. UV exposure can be the most damaging during this part of the day.
