Getting Started

  • Step One: Fill out the information packet and PAR-Q forms (also available at the Operations Desk).
  • Step Two: Turn in packet with completed forms to the Assistant Director for Fitness in the Fitness Assessment Center, located in the Rice Recreation Center Gymnasium Building off the East Gym. A Personal Trainer will contact you within 2 business days to schedule an appointment.
    Your information packet and PAR-Q form must be completed before your first meeting with a trainer.
  • Step Three: Choose the session or package type that suits your needs.
  • Step Four: A Personal Trainer will contact you after review of your health history and goals.
  • Step Five: Get started on your way to better health!

Payment Policy

Sessions will be prepaid and will be due at the time of the initial appointment. Check, cash or credit card is accepted. Please make checks payable to Rice University. A 2.04% fee will be included in all credit card payments. Paying a Personal Trainer directly is strictly prohibited; all membership privileges to the Recreation Center will be terminated immediately.

Session payments are non-refundable. Single and 5 session packets are good for 90 days from the ORIGINAL DATE OF PURCHASE. Packages of 10 are also available and are good for 180 days from the ORIGINAL DATE OF PURCHASE.

Program Policies

Certified Personal Training and Fitness Training sessions are 60 minutes long. Fitness Assessments and Consultations vary and will run approximately 45 to 75 minutes. Please be on time for appointments. If a client is late for a session, it will still end at the scheduled time. If a client is more than 15 minutes late for a session, it will be considered a no show and the client will forfeit that session.

Clients must be cleared of any risk factors associated with physical activity before meeting with a personal trainer for a session. If risks are identified, the client must provide the trainer with a signed physician’s medical release form stating that the client has been cleared to engage in a physical activity program.

The Rice Recreation Center and Rice University will become the training facility for personal training services during the time of the appointment. Trainers are not permitted to train clients under any other conditions or circumstances.


Additional Information

What to wear:
Please wear comfortable clothing that facilitates movement, along with the appropriate athletic footwear for first visit with the trainer.

Facilities:
The Operations Desk will provide a workout towel and day locker at no charge with your Rice I.D. Patrons must bring their own lock. Shower towel passes can be purchased for 10 towels, semester use (no limit) or annual use (no limit).

Our Certified Personal Trainers

Heather Roussel
Heather Roussel

Heather Roussel started personal training in her hometown of New Orleans. She graduated with a B.S. in Kinesiology with a concentration in Fitness Studies from Louisiana State University in 2005. She holds a certification from ACSM as a Health Fitness Instructor.

Heather specializes in strength-training programs for women and older adults. She also has extensive experience improving functional capacity with special populations such as; people with arthritis, heart disease, asthma, knee/hip replacements and injuries. In addition, Heather prides herself on writing the best individual training programs and motivating people to meet their fitness goals. But what she enjoys most is working with beginner exercisers and the average client who's looking to improve their general fitness.

"I love helping the everyday working masses who want to feel better mentally and physically through exercise," Roussel says. "They don't want to score touchdowns; they just want a better quality of life. That's why I became a personal trainer."

Matt Jones
Matt Jones

Matt Jones began weight training in 6th grade and trained with a number of different techniques and training styles to accommodate for different goals. Matt played 3 years of varsity baseball in high school, one year as team captain, and powerlifted his freshman year. He discontinued competitive powerlifting to focus on baseball for the next 3 years and received All-District, All-Area, and All-State honors.

As a testament to Matt's commitment to success, he received newcomer-of-the-year honors for the Rice Rugby Club in ‘07-08. In August 2008, Matt competed in a WABDL(World Association of Bench and Dead Lifters) powerlifting meet where he placed second in bench press and first in deadlift in his division. This qualified Matt for the World Championships in Las Vegas this November.

Matt is currently a sophomore at Hanszen, President of the Rice Powerlifting Club and received his personal training certification in 2008 from the International Sports Sciences Association.

D'Ondra McGee
D'Ondra McGee

D’Ondra is a graduate of the University of Houston with a B.S. in Kinesiology and a concentration in Exercise Science. D’Ondra was also a former member of the Women’s Tennis Team at U of H.

D’Ondra is an ACE Certified Personal Trainer and is certified in First Aid/CPR from the American Red Cross.

As a personal trainer, D’Ondra looks to assist her clients in attaining their individual goals, while keeping them motivated, enthusiastic, and confident. Some of her interests include working with women and men to improve their overall health and outlook on their lives. She also specializes in the development of sport-specific programs. D’Ondra hopes to challenge her clients and inspire them to work harder than they ever expected to exceed their own limitations. “All I request from my clients is determination, dedication, and a big smile!”

Veronica Cowley-Keating
Veronica Cowley-Keating

"I have been working as a personal trainer for the last year and a half," Veronica says. "I currently hold ACIM - PFIT and NASM certifications. Furthermore, I have a BS in Human Nutrition and Foods from the University of Houston. I have volunteered as a Walking Coach for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Team and Training program."

Veronica continues: "My goal as a personal trainer is to provide a safe, fun and effective individualized program for each of my client(s). In addition to working with my clients cardiovascular and strength programs, I specialize in core, balance and flexibility training also."

AJ Beard
AJ Beard

AJ is the Assistant Director for Fitness Programs at Rice University. She, she also provides personal training services on a limited basis for members of the Rice community. She is certified as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. AJ can most often be found leading dedicated soldiers in the morning Boot Camp for Rice or as an associate at Wiess College.
